X-rays won't show much!. If this has been going on for only a week or 2 then it might be nothing more than a muscle issue which can be cured by taking muscle relaxers!. If it's been an ongoing problem for some time then it's probably either a herniated or ruptured disc in the L-4 L-5 region (L=lumbar section of the spine)!. What happens is the disc which is filled with liquid can compress and create a bulge (herniation) that presses on the sciatic nerve and the spinal cord!. this results in extreme lower back pain as well a shooting pain down both legs combined with numbness in the legs!. The only way to properly diagnose this is by performing an MRI!. MRI's are expensive so doctors aren't too eager to request the test!. Disc ruptures are rare, that's when the disc outer wall rips open allowing the fluid to escape!. The only cure for that is called fusion surgery!. That's where they remove the disc and replace it with either bones from your pelvis or bones from a cadaver, then they will use 2 small plates to hold the vertabre together with screws!. Treatment for a herniated disc is usually done with epiderals (injecting steroids directly into the damaged disc, followed with physical thearpy!. It took the doctors a couple of years before they finally recommended surgery on my back!. After years of pain and using very strong addictive pain killers I had the surgery and am completely drug and pain free today!.

If this continues then be insistant on getting an MRI ASAP!. Sometimes it's up to the patient to force the issue!.
Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

no!. but get a hot and cold pack and relax with it for a few hoursWww@Answer-Health@Com

The dude makes a good point!. However, one point i will argue is that an MRI is not always necessary unless you have profound neurological deficits, are unable to urinate or you have a history of cancer or other serious medical pathology!.

Are you still in the mililtary!? Would it be possible for you to go outside the military to find a PT who is certified in mechanical diagnosis and therapy!? An MDT certified provider has been found to be as much as 90% as accurate as an MRI in detecting the presense of a disc bulge or herniation!. !.!.!.and it costs much less than an MRI!.
