Answers:
Hi,

If D!.C!. is for Doctor of Chiropractic, MA is for Master's degree, DCIS stands for Diplomate in some association!.!.!.for example Diplomate International Chiropractic Society!.!.it is a title given to those who passed their respective board exams!. sometimes you may encounter FICS which may mean Fellow International Chiropractic Society!.

all these abbreviations stand for a degree or continuing study each doctor undergoes!. it also tells you that s/he is a member of an association of his/her respective specialty!.

this is what you call continuing medical education!. after medical school, they continue to specialize!. if not, they will be considered general practitioners!. when a doctor specializes, i!.e!. cardiology, pulmonology or rehabilitation medicine, they undergo what you call a residency training program!. depends on the specialty, they will have to be in that program for 3-5 years!. after which, they will take a written and oral board exam then they can be considered a Diplomate!. a Fellow in turn is an active member of their respective society after the board exams!.

this can in turn give you a sense of security that you can check the standing of these doctors in their respective associations if they are affiliated or not!. most of the time, patients prefer those who are members of good standing of the organization!.

so the next time you go to your doctor, check if there is anything more than MD after his/her name!. if anything happens (God forbid), you can always go to their respective associations for assistance!.

hope this helps!
