Question: DO you have a back condition--"sciatica",and if you got physcial therapy,did it HELP!?
I fell like 8 yrs!. ago!.
even tho the pain isn't excruciating, it's sooooo annoying and yes there is pain!.
Plus it exhausts me, and just got a prescription for an xray!.
and a precription after that to seek physical therapy--does PT work 4U!?!? if you get it!?
chiropractic didn't work!.
exercise DOES work!.
But need something more!.
do those back pills work [the vitamins you get at the Chiro!.office!?

For those who see a physical therapist who is credentialed in mechanical diagnosis and therapy and found to display a "directional preference" (often estimated between about 50-70% of people) and that directional preference is utilized in your exercise program, 90% of people have either complete pain relief or are at least signficantly better within two weeks (Long, et al; "Does it matter which exercise!?"!.!.!.Spine 2007)!. Therefore, I'd highly recommend you see someone who is credentialed in this!.

The method is also very safe, as the same study revealed that no one was worsened by the method!. The rules of assessment of the method ensure that the patient abandons maneuvers that are harmful!. Therefore, MRI prior to PT is not necessary!. In fact, the MDT assessment is found to be as much as 90% accurate as an MRI in detecting the presence of a disc bulge or herniation!. Complete rupture or protrusion of the disc is also relatively easy to pick up on examination!.!.!.it presents much differently than someone with a herniation!. I would attest that MRIs are only necessary in cases where people have a history of cancer, have profound neurological deficit, are unable to uninate, or are found to have an "irreducible" derrangement upon examination by the MDT provider!. Otherwise, it's providing us information we already assume to be true!.

The fact that you say exercise helps makes you an excellent candidate for the MDT appraoch, and I am fairly confident a "directional preference" will be found in you!. One just needs to show you which types of exercise on which to focus!.

i had an accident 5 months ago and i am currently dealing with chronic left sided sciatica!. Basically as said above something is compressing the sciatic nerve most probably a disc protrusion however it is very very uncommon to have this for 8 years! basically if this is the case a chiropractor will not help at all and has probably done more damage than good!. If you can deal with the pain seeing a physio is probably your best bet aswell as getting a doctor to diagnose the condition early!. IMO wait for the results from your CT and\or MRI scans and then ask for possible courses of action!. IF it is a disc protrusion a walk for 10 minutes every 1-2 hours will go a long way as well as avoiding sitting when you can and some physio work!. However considering the long duration you might be inline for something more invasive such as a cortizone injection to the spine or even surgury!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't have chronic sciatica but I have had sciatica and physical therapy was the only thing that helped at all!. If that doesn't work, my husband has more trouble with it than I do!. His sciatic nerve gets inflamed once or twice a year and he swears by accupuncture for his pain!. You might give that a shot!.

Sciatica can be caused by a multitude of conditions, but all involve injury to the sciatic nerve, which is a bundle of nerves that branch off of the lower spine and pass through the butt muscles down the back of your leg!. The path of pain helps determine which nerve or nerves are involved from the spine level!. When the nerve is pinched or stretched, it puts pressure on the nerve path and triggers pain!. You need the Xrays to see the bones in the spine, but you would need an MRI to see the nerves and discs in the back to determine where the problem lies!. Regardless, sometimes a GOOD chiropractic can help but so can physical therapy!. It is important to strengthen all the back muscles to take the strain off the discs and spine bones that can put more pressure on the nerves that are involved, and worsen the condition!. The fact that this was an old injury that you have been struggling with for so many years guarantees that you have a 'deconditioned' back and so exercise and PT will definitely help, but you will have to do the work and recognize it will hurt some while you go through the process!. You will need pain management for this!.
Before you do anything, though, your doctor should be sure that you do not have a ruptured disc, which is the pad between the spine bones!. If it is ruptured, any PT or Chiropractic adjustment can worsen your condition and do more damage than good!. If that is what is wrong, seek a good neurosurgeon, NOT orthopedic, who specializes in spine surgery!. There are minimally invasive procedures that will shave off the ruptured portion of disc that is putting pressure on the nerve and usually fix the problem!.
You must realize, though, that having this problem for so many years may mean there is permanent injury to the nerve that nothing can fix, but it is still worth finding out and doing all you can to correct it now!. Chronic pain is miserable and life limiting, afterall!.!.!.!.!.!.

As for the vitamins!.!.!.supplements can help strengthen bone and tendons and lubricate joints somewhat, but are not a cureall and will probably do little to correct whatever your underlying problem is!.
