What will I do at Physical Therapy?!

Question: What will I do at Physical Therapy!?
I have been through a very stressful time lately and as a result have been having horrible back spasms (I've been in the ER twice) My doctor has just perscribed (among other things) physical therapy!. I've always thought Physical Therapy was for after a severe injury/accident/ or surgery i!.e!. relearning how to use certain body parts etc!. I'm in great shape(a dance teacher) so i'm just wondering what to expect from physical therapy!. My problem seems to be that my muscles don't relax ever and then just finally give out and spasm!. Will physical therapy help this!?

What should I be prepared to do!? I'm a little nervous because I am in a lot of pain and because i've never done anything like this before!. Any help would be appreciated -- Thanks!Www@Answer-Health@Com

if you are not going to actually being doing exercises due to so much pain, you might be getting several different types of treatment!. I use to work at NovaCare (physical therapy center) and we had all kinds of patients!. Some had to do whirl pool treatment in very cold ice, i have done ice treatments for hand therapy and then we also used machines (kinda like the ultra sound ones) to give treatments that would pass electrodes/vibrations to the direct area (kinda like a massage treatment) I don't think you have anything to be worried about, if it's really painful, this is what they are going to try and assist with!. Different methods for different offices!. you will be fine!. I had an ACL injury and I had extensive exercises!. At first they were a little painful, but it's a healing process and that assisted my aches, pains and injury to get back on my feet again!. Weights and exercises were included specifically for the knee and muscles in the surrounding area!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It really helps, do what they ask you to do, but if you get to point that feel mayor pain doing any routine, please let them know (important) they know the techniques you have the pain!.

Listen to your body, you may feel better, but take it very easy, I know you love to dance and teach, but your body might be asking you for a long break, 3-4 months, I know it sounds crazy to you, but it's for your best!. I'm assuming you're in your 25-30's !. Listen to your body!. (Very Important) Don't exercise if you feel any pain!.

Wish you the best!. Take care!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, I also have a back injury, and I did physio once!. Only once because the next day I ended up in the emergency, unable to move and huge amounts of pain!.They didnt make me exersise or stretch the whole time, just a bit but they used a method of electrodes/vibrations on the spot of my back, just like the person answered above, that they use different things than just exersizing!. Im NOT trying to scare you, my back injury is completely different but sometimes physio isnt always the cure to everyone!. I would just be open minded on trying other things than what your doctor suggest!. Call around for accupuncture or accupressure and tell them about your back and they might actually help lots than you would think! Most doctors dont suggest other things like those or chiropractor because its not in their field or profession!. I just want to let you know from my experience that their might be a chance it wont work out, but Im not saying dont go do it! You should, but just be open to other things!
Hope everything works well!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

One of the problems is that you think that you are in great shape but your muscles don't quite feel that way!. By that I mean you maybe overusing certain groups and causing imbalances that your body is reacting to!. The therapist will check your posture which I am sure is good being a dancer, range of motion, muscular strength and balance, and most of all how your pelvis is aligned!. Without seeing you it would be impossible to tell what might be wrong but it was wise of your physician to refer you to a therapist!. There are multiple modalities available to break up muscular irritation!. My personal favorite is an ice massage!. This numbs the area and lets the muscles relax and then they can be worked on without any problems!. This technique can only be done in the hands of someone experienced with using ice!. Then there are myofascial techniques that open up restricted bands of fiber to allow a return to normal positioning!. Muscular imbalances from postural positioning and activities are a large problem for most people!. Once corrected and given a program to follow at home the issue is resolved!. Talk to your therapist we are usually very concerned about our patients and their concerns!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Although my problem was different than yours, I had to undergo 4 months of physical therapy after having knee surgery!. I suspect the regimen would be different to treat back spasms, though!.

My guess would be that if they have identified the cause of your back problems, or can narrow it down, they can provide exercises that will help to alleviate the suffering and pain!.

From my experience, it isn't really anything to be nervous about!. The physical therapists are generally very good at what they do and are able to provide services that help to strengthen and heal your body!. Although there was pain associated with some of the things I did (after all, I was recovering from surgery), most of the emphasis was on avoiding pain and therefore, much of the treatment is actually very therapeutic!.

I wish you the best, and hope you make a full recovery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
