If you have a severe hematoma (accumulating blood clot) or severe swelling in the brain from a blow to the head, the first thing that they will do is make burr holes into your skull to release the pressure and suction out any blood clots!. If the swelling is still too much, they would then proceed to removing part of your skull!. They would then put in an ICP (intercranial pressure monitor)!. This would monitor the amount of pressure in your brain!. (you would be sent to intensive care after this) Once the pressure goes down to a safe level (a few days or weeks), they would bring you back to surgery and and either create a bone flap with medical cement (procedure called a crainioplasty) or attach on a metal plate to protect your brain!.

There really aren't many options surgically for subdural hematoma or other swelling in the brain!. It is pretty straight forth!. You make an opening to release the pressure!. If pressure is not release enough, you remove more bone until the pressure comes down!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

To begin with, a concussion is technically bruising of the brain
in extreme cases!. Symptoms include nausea/vomiting, de-
creased level of consciousness and disorientation or being
unaware of surroundings, date, time, and even who you are!.
Severe concussions are usually self limiting ,but some severe
blows or trauma to the head may result in bleeding, which may
result in subdural hematoma(blood clots) on the brain!. This can
be a very serious condition and surgery may be required to
remedy the condition!. This surgery is called a craniotomy and
involves either burr holes, drilling into the skull and irrigating
out the clots causing the increase pressure or creating a "flap" where an actual piece of skull is removed to gain access to the clots or damaged area, where the clots are
removed and the skull returned to its place!. Either of these
procedures are risky as is any surgery, but risk is outweighed
but necessity to prevent the patient dying!. Sometimes there
will be active bleeding and this must be stopped with some
type of hemostasis such as topical applications of thrombin
or cauterization where an electrical current burns the site to
close up the blood vessel that is leaking!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You don't have to have surgery for a concussion!. even In a severe concussion!. The doctor may keep you for observation!. you would watch the person closely, rest, ice maybe, but not surgery!. unless, there is another injury to the brain, like a bleed or something that requires surgery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

most concussions require no surgery!. !.

if the bone is broken and depressed into the brain then it needs to be corrected!. !.

if too much pressure builds up, then a burr hole may be drilled!. !. !.relatively benign procedure

any surgery is risky, but leaving bone fragment in the brain is probably riskier!. !. !.Www@Answer-Health@Com
