Doctors, Nurses, Someone who might know?!

Question: Doctors, Nurses, Someone who might know!?
I just started going to a pain clinic last month and they started me on Fentynal patches!. Well I'm allergic to the Fentynal,so I can't take it!.
I'm also allergic to Codiene, but I do fine with Synthetic codeine such as Hydrocodone!.
I'm now scared that the pain clinic will put me on Methadone!. They seem to have an opiate phobia!. By this I mean they act like everyone will abuse the meds they are given!.'
I would much rather them try me on Hydrocodone because I know they help my pain, but I have a feeling they will put me on Methadone!.
So since I'm allergic to Codeine wouldn't that rule out Methadone as a treatment option!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Usually the problem with patients taking hydrocodone alone for chronic pain is that they are unable to control their pain on acceptable amounts of the medication!.

Hydrocodone may work for your pain, but by law in the US it must be combined with another substance such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen as we see in Viocdin and Vicoprofen!. The additive substances can only be taken to a certain level before they affect the other organ systems!. Unfortunately when a patient is given the 6 Vicodin ES per day which is recommended they often finish the prescription before the end of the month, because they needed 12 or more per day to control the pain!.

Then the physician gets the phone calls about the medication being dropped in the toilet or sink, or left on the car roof, or stolen, or even eaten by the dog!.

There are other opiates, and methadone and fentanyl are opiates, so that is obviously not the issue!.

If you are seen a pain management specialist it is likely that you either have pain which is chronic or so severe that normal doses of schedule III narcotics, like hydrocodone, do not control the pain adequately!.

Discuss the options with the physician!. Incidentally, Hydrocodone is synthetized from codeine and thebaine so there is a greater chance of you being allergic to hydrocodone than an allergy to methadone which is a true synthetic opioid!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Don't start on the methadone!. I've been in a pain mangement program for a spine injury and have been on methadone!. It's not worth it!. Start a daily journal of your pain, where you hurt
when you hurt
how badly on a scale of 1-10 you hurt
and what the pain is keeping you from doing in your everyday life!. If you wants meds that work this is the way!.

I've been taking hydrocodone and oxycodone for sveral years and they work just fine as long as you don't start abusing them!. I've you do then you will have a problem,,a big one!.

I don't know any doctor that would have a problem giving you hydrocodone instead of fentynal patches or methadone!. The problem is usually the other way around!. They all to often hear "hydrocodone doesn't work on me, I need something stronger!" I would think you'd be a breath of fresh air only asking for hydrocodone!.

Really, if hydrocodone works for your pain, you shouldn't even be at a pain clinic!. I know it is getting increasingly harder to find a general dr who will prescribe pain meds, but I imagine if you look, you can probably find a dr who will give you a monthly supply of hydrocodones!.

It is important to keep in mind though that the longer you take any pain medicine, your tolerance will build up!. If hydrocodones work now for your pain, if you have to take them everyday, for a long period of time, the same dose will do nothing for your pain!. They will have you take 2 every 4 hours instead of one, until they increase to the point that they will have to switch you to oxycodones, then stronger, stronger!.!.!.

Just talk to your doctor!. I think they will give you a hug for asking for something less strong then what they have been writing for you!. That is, if they don't faint! Good luck to you!. And please, please, please don't let them put you on methadone!. That stuff is bad news!. I mean if you ever plan on getting off of it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
