Going into "shock", is it a mental thing, or a physical thing?!

Question: Going into "shock", is it a mental thing, or a physical thing!?
Got stabbed in the hand with a steak knife on the weekend, and I think I went into shock, it didn't really hurt at the time, but suddenly my hearing became muffled, I felt faint and felt like I was going to be sick!. Then had a little cry afterwards!. It was fairly deep and had to be stitched together!. Was this shock!? And is the crying a reaction to shock!? I do weaker people go into shock more easily!? Can you train yourself against it!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
going into shock is a normal body reaction, there is not much you can do about it, and very little you can do to "train" yourself not to go into shock!. Your hearing becoming muffled, felling faint, and not feeling it was part of going into shock, but you did not get very far or you would have been in serious trouble!. the cry had little to do with anything other than you suffered an injury!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Shock is a physical condition!. It is when the circulatory system fails to deliver oxygenated blood to the body's tissues and vital organs!. It happens after an injury that can be very minor (such as your steak knife incident) or major!. You might have been going into shock, it's hard to tell, because although the symptoms you described can fit in with shock, it also could come from a host of other things!. And no, weaker people do not go into shock more easily and you can not train yourself against it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are 5 forms of shock (all extreme terminal and fetal if not treated immediatly):

- Anaphalactic (extreme allergic reaction with resperatory failure)
- Cardiogenic (massive myocardial infarction)
- Hypovolemic (irreversable blood loss)
- Distributive (vasodialation - body's cell fluids leaking into the entire body)
- Obstructive (such as with c-spine paralysis or cardiac tamponade)

As traumatic as it may have seemed to you, what you experienced from a low velocity (a bullet from a gun would be a high velocity) injury to a peripheral area is not capable to cause any of these "real" shocks!. Even if the entire hand had been cut off, it's unlikely that you'd experience hypovolemic shock from a clean cut with a knife (the arterial muscles contract immediatly and bleeding is easy to control)!. A ripping injury, and larger parts, such as an arm or leg, and it's a different story!.!.!.

You experienced a pychological dialation (lowering of your bloodpressure so far that your brain was not getting enough oxygen and the fainting works as a defense mechanism not to face or stay conscious)!.

It's not necessarily "weaker" people who faint, it's just a pychological instinctive reaction!. Crying is normal, too!

Yes, you can "train" yourself not to get upset (you get used to anything in my field after a while), especially if you know what is urgent and what is not!.

If you feel like you're going to faint again for emotional reasons, you can take deep breaths and lower your head (to increase blood flow to your brain)Www@Answer-Health@Com

The medical definition is a sudden drop in blood pressure resulting in the body not being able to maintain adequate blood flow to the vital organs!. It also causes decrease oxygen profusion to the organs!. What you had was a anxiety attack!. You did not get stabbed in an area that would cause profuse enough bleeding for shock!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think what you were experiencing was more of a panic attack (acute stress event), which is quite understandable!.!.!.

As far as the medical definitely of "shock", it is a quite serious, and life-threatening medical condition where insufficient blood flow reaches the body tissues!. It is unlikely from what you described that this occurred, which is great news because you are still with us!.!.!. :)

Good Luck and I Hope this Helps!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are four stages of shock, and it sounds like your stage was the Hypovolemic Shock, which has to do with blood loss!. Shock, is failure of the heart and blood vessels to maintain enough oxygen-rich blood flowing to the vital organs of the body!. Psychogenic shock is a "shock like condition" produced by excessive fear, joy, anger, or grief
So I guess this shows that it is BOTH!Www@Answer-Health@Com

The mental effect is mostly hormonal and due to lack of either oxygen/sugar or both!. The term shock actually refers to a physiological state, in this case probably due to loss of blood!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, you were in shock!. It's a physical reaction to trauma, (injury)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

BOTH! it all works together :)Www@Answer-Health@Com
