My son had an accident at school!?!

Question: My son had an accident at school!!?
He is five (and quite clumsy! lol) he fell and hit his head on the ground outside!. The school phoned me to collect him so I could "keep a closer eye on him for the afternoon" and i was given a letter stating that he had sustained a "small graze to the side of his forehead" Their "qualified first aider" covered it with a temporary bandage and told me to remove that and take a look to make sure there wasn't any dirt in it when i got him home!.
When i removed the bandage i saw that,in fact, his head had received a small but deep cut (i could see bone - sorry i know tmi!) it was no longer bleeding but i could clearly see that this was no "graze" i took him to hospital where they applied a paper stitch and advised that i treat it as a minor head injury and look out for signs of concussion etc!.
Can I complain to the school for blatently playing down his injury in this way!? I know its minor but the difference between a "graze" and the injury he actually received are obvious!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Farm Bred quote:
"The school has probably seen more head injuries than you have, and from their experience, this probably wasn't that bad!. If your son is ok, then no harm; no foul!. Since you admit that your son is clumsy, I would work on my sons dexterity rather than spending time complaining to the school!."

Mr!. Genius,
Do you happen to have children!? Or do you happen to work in the healthcare field!? Because if you did work in the healthcare field you would certainly know that the "looks" of something certainly isn't an indicator of how serious an injury can be!. Especially regarding head injuries! For example, 2 people come into the ER after an auto accident!. John Doe enters on a stretcher, has scrapes, bruises, swelling, and blood on just about every square inch of his body!. Jane Doe, his wife, ambulates into the ER without any assist, no visible cuts, scrapes, or bruises, and when asked if she is ok, she replies I'm fine, just take care of my husband! So in triage, John Doe is given first priority as his wife is taken to an exam room where the dr will see her as soon as possible!. After tending to John, it is found that he only has superficial scrapes and cuts, he's bandaged, stitched, and given wound care instructions for home!. When the ER doc goes in to see his wife, Jane, she is dead on the floor!. Although she had no visual injuries, the crash caused her to have lethal internal injuries, from which she bled to death silently and alone!.

Now, obviously you don't know what a concussion is so I'll give you the definition for one found on the site I'll reference below:
What is a concussion!?
A concussion is not just a bump on the head or a rattling of the brain!. It is a mild brain injury that results in a temporary change in brain function!. The brain is composed of soft tissues encased within the hard bone of the skull!. A concussion occurs when your head is hit or jolted and your brain's soft tissue moves in reaction to the sudden force!. At impact with the skull, the brain can become bruised, tissues can be torn, and minor swelling can occur (Fig!. 1)!. An injury to the brain can cause neurons (nerve cells) and nerve tracts (neurological pathways) to change or not function properly!. The changes in brain function can change the way you think, act, or feel!.

I will assume for argument's sake that you don't have children because when you put the words "my child", "concussion", "first aider at school said he was fine", and then statements from you like: "the schools seen more head injuries than you have", "based on their experience, it 'probably' wasn't that bad", and "if he's ok, no harm, no foul"!. In cases of head injuries and concussions, you have no idea if your child is "fine", not even a doctor, much less a "qualified first aider at school" can simply look at a wound on a child's head and tell if he will be fine or not!. That's almost the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard until you tell this lady that if her son's clumsy, she should be working on his dexterity instead of complaining about the school!. If you're going to be such a genius, you should know that dexterity is fine motor control with hands, especially the fingers, and wouldn't help this woman's son much with falling down!. Maybe what you meant to say is that he needs to work on his static and dynamic balance and coordination!. However, at 5 years old, children are still "clumsy"!. To the mom who asked the question, here is a general guide you can go by: (look especially at the first one)

5 years or more
Motor development
Gains greater control over large and fine motor skills; movements are more precise and deliberate, though some clumsiness persists!.
Enjoys vigorous running, jumping, climbing, and throwing est!.
Has trouble staying still!.
Span of attention increases; works at tasks for longer periods of time, though
Can concentrate effort but not always consistently!.
Understands time (today, tomorrow, yesterday) and simple motion (things go faster than others)!.
Recognizes seasons and major activities done in the times!.
Has fun with problem solving and sorting activities like stacking, puzzles and mazes
Enjoys the challenge of puzzles, counting and sorting activities, paper-and-pencil mazes, and games that involve matching letters and words with pictures!.
Recognizes some words by sight; attempts to sound out words
In some cases the child may be reading well!.
functioning which facilitates learning to ride a bicycle, swim, swing a bat, or kick a ball!.
Making things is enjoyed!.
Reverses or confuse certain letters: b/d, p/g, g/q, t/f!.
Able to trace objects!.
Folds and cuts paper into simple shapes!.
Can Tie Laces, string (like shoes)!.

If you're going to be a smart a*%, please at least get your terms right!.
To the mom, I would not sue the school as somebody mentioned, but yes you should notify them what you and the dr found!. The next little boy with a head injury may not be so lucky to have a mom that even took the original bandage off, much less looked for signs of a concussion!. Those kids may have a parent like Farm Boy, or whatever his name is!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i think you should take a picture of the cut and take it the
office, and say something along!. " I think you should
treat the students with more care!.A graze!?Heck, you can see the bone!" Raise your voice too!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Woow!. For sure!. The school messed up big time, even if it is minor!. If i were you!.!.!.id sue!.

Hope hes okay!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Contact your son's teacher and set up a conference with him/her, the schools "qualified first aider" and the principal!.
Take in the paper from the hospital that stated that his cut was worse than what they said it was!. Also see if the "qualified first aider" is really Qualified!.
If it turns out that the person is not qualified I would take the matter to the school board and file a formal complaint!.

Also make sure that they did all the correct paper work stating how he was injured!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The school has probably seen more head injuries than you have, and from their experience, this probably wasn't that bad!. If your son is ok, then no harm; no foul!. Since you admit that your son is clumsy, I would work on my sons dexterity rather than spending time complaining to the school!. Btw, I think Jill B is a pain in the a$s!. I actually have 5 children and if you or she would read some of my blog, you would find out that I have dealt with some serious childhood injuries!. But no, it's much easier for hysterical women to write me off as some uncaring neaderthal rather than acknowledging that this is a boy and boys get hurt!. I hope he will grow into a man someday but if you follow the coddling Jill B suggests, I have my doubts!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
