Question: Will the steroid shot help or do more damage!? Will surgery help or do more damage!?
!.I have always had severe scoliosis (upper back)!. Injury a year ago, now I have 4 degenerated discs in neck and 2 herniated discs at L5/6/7!. Also torn rotator cuff(left)!. I`m 44, tolerable pain!. Why is Dr!. concerned with 2 herniated disc when the shoulder is the main pain problem!? He admits that he doesnt treat scoliosis, am I being paranoid that the Dr!. could do more damage with the shots !? I have already been experiencing muscle weakness and have been severly impaired by the injury!. I consider myself lucky to have the movement that I`ve got left!. Am I risking being paralized !? Also Dr!. already mis-prescribed meds twice that could have had devastating results and had 3 other Drs tell me that I`m not a good candidate for surgery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Who's to say why he's concerned about those discs!. Perhaps its something he's comfortable treating!.
Herniated discs in your lower back is not related to your scoliosis so he's not trying to treat your upper back!. (Btw, Its good that he admits to not being able to treat your scoliosis!.)
But, if he's not able or willing to address your main concern (your shoulder), you'd better get another ortho doc!.
As for the steroid shot, it should act somewhere between doing nothing and helping!. I've had two attempts for my own problems - one helped and the other didn't do a thing!. So if your herniated discs are painful, you should be okay with the shots!. I was told that even if they do work, its for a max of four months!.
Are you thinking about surgery for your upper back!? My personal checklist for this is:
1) See a scoliosis specialist if you're not already seeing one!.
2) Make sure he's done a couple hundered fusions!. Paralysis is very rare with someone that has experience!.
3) Make sure you're comfortable with him!.
4) Even within the group of scoliosis specialists, some are better than others!. If one specialist says "no" to surgery and you feel like you need to get it done, don't quit looking!. There are a few of what we call "super docs", ones that handle re-alignment surgery for flatback, for example!. If these guys say "no", you'd better listen to them!. Pain management is in your future!.
