Is it dangerous to sit on a computer for hours if you're still active?!

Question: Is it dangerous to sit on a computer for hours if you're still active!?
I study computer technology at uni so I sit on computers for hours and hours and hours on end, especially while programming!.

I'm very active though having danced for 17 years and dance around 4 hours a week!. I also go walking with my sisters, do yoga, weights and netball!.

I'm starting to get pain through my legs though and between my shoulder blades!. I have pretty good posture but I still start to hurt during long sessions at the computer!.

Am I going to damage myself even though I stay active!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Since you're a dancer, I would be more likely to blame body damage on the stresses of dancing than on time spent on the computer!. What kind of dancing have you done for seventeen years!? A friend of mine did ballet for years and ended up with horrible knee and leg problems from it!. Granted, she's a massive overachiever and probably set herself up for extensive moves!.

Hours and hours and hours on the computer can be damaging, especially if your aren't paying attention to ergonomics!. This is why companies make so much money selling ergonomic products!. Make sure you have a proper footrest that keeps your thighs parallel to the floor and when you sit, either use a lumbar support cushion or sit toward the front of your seat with your back and neck straight (if you need to, get a monitor riser to raise the monitor so it's at eye level)!. Hold your shoulders back and make sure your hands are lower than your wrists and that your fingers turn toward the center of the keyboard to help prevent carpal tunnel!.

Regular breaks can help your body and mind!. As a writer, I know how easy it is to get into a project and forget to take time to stretch and move around!. Since you do yoga, perhaps a ten minute yoga session each hour could help you with body aches and the increased blood flow to your head will help with problem solving as you program!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes!. You are right!.
You should try to move around to improve blood circulation!.
You must also drink lots of water or you might get Economy class syndrome (blood clot in the vein that may cause death)!.

I am also in IT!. I need to move around after every hour at the desk!. Either I go to talk to my system users or take some drinks!.

I also got some lower back pain problem!. But after I start to exercise more often to strengthern my lower back muscle!. The pain go away!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yep!. prolonged and consistent inactivity does do damage to your body!. You need to break up your day, go for walk, get up fool around a bit!.!.!.!. don't stay dormant at your seat because it will affect you physically!.

I'm in IT too, and spend no more then an hour at my desk!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think ya have to break it up a bit, maybe an hour on the computer gets 10 mins break, it just keep circulation going cause if your sat too long it raises the risk of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes I heard that if men put computers on their laps for long stretches it can damage their fertility!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Get a good cushion!. Sitting on a bare comp for any time would suck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I laugh at the other responses!. I sit on my computer for 18 hours a day and fit as a!.!.!. whats the saying!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I cannot but admire people who sit on a computer for hours and hours!. You see I cannot!. At the most I can do 2 hours straight!.!.and that's it!. I mean I have a 4 hour block limit with my Internet Service Provider as I had with previous ISP's!. And I have never reached that in the approx!. 8 years I had the internet!.
You are pretty active!.!.as you described and I am assuming here that you are very young being still at university (18 to 25 years old)!. I would not assume that this is due to sitting at a computer for a long time!. Muscular pain in the young is not normal as it is in old age!. If it is not improving I would consult a doctor in order to have some blood tests done!. It could be a sign of either rheumatoid arthritis or gout!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
