Question: More exercise on a knee injury, or less!?
I think I damaged my knee carrying my sleeping 5 year old up the stairs into my home!. My five year old weighs about 35 pounds, and is really tall!.

Should I walk it off - start more exercise, or should I lay off of it!? It's the back of my knee that hurts a lot now!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Any injury to a weight bearing area of the body is most always made worse by putting it back into use right away!. The knee is a classic example of a weight bearing area with the added complexity of the number of ligaments that allow it to bend!.

You must rest it and first use a cold compress directly to the affected area!. An overstressed ligament or tendon will be inflamed and swollen often the swelling is not visible from the outside but just as real!. Cold compresses and resting the injured area at least even with, or better, above a level even with the heart will help minimize blood flow, minimize lymph fluid surrounding it and keep the inflammation to a minimum!. Depending on the severity of the injury, it could take anywhere from 24 hours to seven days before it once again feels normal!.

When you must move around, do so with most of your weight on your opposite leg!. Keep in mind however, standing and walking around will prolong the healing process!. Keep your weight off of it as much as possible!.

If you are not taking any kind of blood thinners, two aspirin every 4 to 6 hours taken with food, will reduce pain and swelling along with cold compresses!.

The key is rest and keeping the area elevated!. The cold compress should be removed for 10 to 15 minutes every hour or so!. Make sure to apply an elastic wrap to hold the compress in position and to keep the skin dry, by applying a water repellent material such as a plastic food wrapping bag directly against your skin with the compress on top of it!. You want to archive a "dry cold" to the affected area!. Keeping the affected area dry will prevent skin chafing and cracking that occurs when skin is kept wet for lengthy periods of time!.throughout therapy!.

If you don't feel improvement in about 48 hours, call your doctor!. You could have a ligament torn and need more aggressive treatment!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Rest whilst you can!.
Put some ice on it now, 10 min on, 10 min off for about an hour!. Tomorrow, put a heat pack on if it is still sore!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Rest rest rest, alternate between warm and cool compresses!. You don't want to strain your knee any more than it has been!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
