Unless he's a moron (and it doesnt appear he is since he quit for 3 months) - he already knows that it's bad for him!.
What it boils down to is: Is this acceptable to YOU!? You can't change someone!. You can explain your concerns to him - and if he continues, then you just have to decide if that is a part of his lifestyle that you want to tolerate!.

Just talk to him!. slowly and with patient, perseverance, give
to him a chance!. Don't follow him on his way!. Demostrate to
him how you love but never descriminate at all!.
