How much sleep do I need to make up for a week of insomnia?!

Question: How much sleep do I need to make up for a week of insomnia!?
Okay, so basically, I couldn*t sleep more than 45 minutes to an hour for the last week!. The last 2 days, I couldn*t sleep at all!.
I went to the ER because the insomnia was giving me panic attacks!. I never had them before!.
They gave me an EKG and a chest Xray and some blood tests!. I guess this made me feel better, because I was falling asleep in the ER around 11pm!. I came home, played Guitar Hero a little, ate some chicken, and went to sleep at around 12:30!.
I got up at 8:30am to open the door when my boyfriend came home from work!. I was still sleepy so I went back to sleep immediately!.
I got up at 10, stayed up about half an hour and was still sleepy!. So I went back to sleep!.
I slept till 12:30, got something to drink and went to the bathroom!. I went back to sleep at a little after one!.
I then got up at around 2:30 and stayed up till now!. I*m exhausted again!.
Do you need more sleep after insomnia!? And if you do how much do you recommend!? I don*t want to mess up my sleep schedule!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You built up a 'sleep debt' while suffering from the severe insomnia, and now your body is trying to play catch-up!. However, after the first 24 hours, it's important to get back into a regular sleep/wake routine so that you can re-set your body clock!.

Of course, this isn't going to happen overnight and you'll need to be patient!. It's also important to figure out why you couldn't sleep, unless you understand and treat the underlying problem, the insomnia could come back!.

To help you get a good nights sleep, set up a calming bedtime routine and go to bed/wake up at the same time every day!. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, spicy/heavy meals and exercise in the 3 or 4 hours leading up to bedtime!.

It's like going back from vacation and getting jet lag!. What I would do is try to keep yourself up until your normal bedtime--maybe go to bed a bit earlier, but at least wait until it's dark out--and wake up at the normal time!. You'll adjust eventually--making it up will just confuse you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

hate to say it, but you can never make up sleep!. once its gone, its gone!. ive had insomnia before and i took some kind of herbal pills!. they dont make you fall asleep but they help you relax!. why dont you try turning the lights off and watching tv with low volume for a while, (always gets me tired)Www@Answer-Health@Com
