If he's been this way a couple of days, and his pain is not being managed by the meds that he has - you should get him to a Doc!. If he hasn't taken any anti-inflamitories (ie: Ibuprofen or Naproxen) maybe try those!. It's possible he slipped a vertabrate & may have a pinched nerve!.

Gi ven the recent history its probably a torn or pulled muscle, massage is great, but, just like in any profession, you can find bad eggs (which can make a problem worse)!. He could also, due to tight/cramping muscles, have pulled a joint/bone out of place!. I've got a great deal of experiance with sports injuries/back issues both personally and in family history!. You're discription isn't percise enough to give specific advise!. If you want to contact me, my email in on my user profile!. Without further info, if he can't sit up for longer than 3 days (expected time for a sore muscle to start feeling better) he should see a doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Go to an orthoped or neurologist and have it looked at!.
It may be simple muscle fatigue, but it could be a neurological issue (e!.g!. disc bulging into the spinal column)!.
Don't take any chances and don't go to a chiropractor for diagnoses!.
If it's muscular, ibuprofen should help!. I personally found relief with 800mg of ibuprofen!. Also, continue the cold packs as that will reduce inflammation!. Heat will only add to the inflammation!.

he could have strained it without knowing it when he was running!. Tell him to keep putting heat on it!. trust me it helps a lot! last year I had my first volleyball game in high school and the day before I was lifting up a matress and I pulled like every muscle back there and could barely breathe!. But I put heat on it all night and all day and ended up starting and winning! But if heat doesn't work then have him go to a doctor!. Good Luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
