Question: 25 years ago I had to have a total hip replacement and now I am faceing having!?
to have it redone!. Has anyone on yahoo Q & A ever had to have one replaced a second time!? If so how long is the recovery!. I mean the 1st time I was 34 and now I am 59!. The reason I had to have it done in 83 was because I got hit by a jeep and it totally smashed my hip and it was eiter replace it or be in a wheel chair for the rest of my life!. The first time I had it done it was done on Oct!. 5th and Thanksgiving I was fixing Thanksgiving dinner and them after dinner I told my sons I wanted to go to Grandmas grave!. When we got their my boys started to get the cruches out of the car and I told them no because the last thing I said to Mother is that she would see me walk again but she passed away before I had the hip replacement and she the last thng she said to me is sister I will never see you walk again and I told her Mother I'm not going to be in this damned wheel chair all my life!. So if anyone has gone through a hip replacement how long was the recovery time!. ThanksWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Your recovery time will vary depending on several variables!. How much viable bone is currently left (femoral/pelvic), what is the reason for the new hip replacement (faulty arthrosis/bone growth or degredation), does your surgeon plan on performing a minimally invasive THR or a much more invasive approach!?

Make sure you do all of the exercises you did last time for your recovery BEFORE having the replacement, having strong muscles and bones is key to a quicker recovery; however, if you're having increased pain with the exercises you might need to find another way to get stronger as pain is an indication you're doing the exs wrong or your hip just can't take it anymore!.

If you're overweight make sure you lose some weight (in a healthy manner, no fad diets) and get enough proteins in your diet to rebuild your tissues before/after surgery!.

Also practice getting in and out of bed/chair, steps/walking with crutches maintaining the hip precautions you'll need to follow BEFORE you go thru with the surgery!. Your post op recovery is much faster when you've prepared yourself ahead of time instead of trying to learn after the surgery!. After the surgery you should be focusing on increasing your function, not learning hip precautions you should have known before surgery!. (Hip precautions after surgery, no excessive hip flexion/keep hips at bend of 90 degrees or less, no crossing your legs, no twisting your involved hip)

Do not be surprised if your recovery takes longer this time!. You are nearly twice the age you were when you had the first surgery!. Don't use that as an excuse but merely as a reference!. With age your bones are more brittle and take longer to heal (so make sure you follow your weight bearing precautions very closely if you have any after surgery)!. Your muscles are also not as strong so you'll need to exert more energy and effort to do the same exercises!. Finally your risk of dislocation goes up significantly with a THR repair/redo!. The surgeons already cut through the joint capsule once and now they're about ready to put another entry point in it as well so you'll now have two places which the joint can more readily dislocate (so make sure you follow the hip precautions to prevent dislocations!)
