I quit 3 years ago!.

First let me tell you that yes you are going to feel crap at least for a few days!. You cannot just stop and your brain accepts that fact - but you are training it to break the habital association of being awake and having a cigarette!.

I was coughing and my chest hurt for a short while when I quit too but I just kept going!. Each day I won without smoking was a day that made it more reason not to go back!.
After the first month I was feeling better, I was getting used to missing a cigarette - you do build a resilience to it after a while and you just learn to cope!. But I can tell you when you wake up a day and don't even remember about a cigarette until later on is a great feeling, you know you are winning!.
It takes time but the strangle of nicotine gets weaker and weaker until you just don't give a crap about smoking!.

Remember that yeah it is tough when it starts but it is not so bad that you cannot do it or that it goes on for weeks and weeks!. Reason it: If it was that bad who could give up smoking!? I was as weak as anyone trying to quit - I went out and got drunk to subsitute the craving on my third day and was almost a crying wreck!. I understand exactly your pain!. I offer you support because it can be done and it is not years but around 4 months if you want to go all the way when you go through a day without craving at all!.
Now I feel better, I don't miss cigarettes and I no longer envy people who are smoking!. You will learn that smokers breath after a cigarette is a real horrid stale smell!.

What you are suffering now you will reap the rewards later and glad you did it!. You have an 8 day head start to a new life!.
Your heart, vasular system and lungs will improve as well as your skin!. The pollution particles don't just go in your lungs it gets moved around to every cell of your body!.
Every successful quiter began somewhere and you already have your foothold!. Keep going you will in the long term never regret it!.

Edit: I quit cold turkey too it seemed the fastest way!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

First of all, WELL DONE!

Your body is going through a transition -- recuperating, healing!. I wouldn't worry about the cough unless it gets noticeably worse over the next week!.

You may be looking for signs that you will look instantly healthier now that you are no longer smoking!. It won't happen that way, but if you take care of yourself -- get a good sleep every night, drink lots of water, eat healthy and exercise -- you will soon be glowing!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't know about the "appearance" but I am assuming it is part of your body's physical withdrawal from the nicotine!. It should subside and you will get a "pinkening" of the skin!. You will have a new, healthier glow very soon! The cough is probably the worst side effect!. I hated that phase! Your lungs are cleaning themselves out!.!.!.Lungs have "cilia" which are like tiny little hairs!. Every time you smoke you immobilize the cilia!. They are coming back to life to do their job of cleaning your lungs!.!.!.I hated that part!!! Congratulations!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

when you were smoking it was hurting your throat, so the natural reaction was to make a mucus lining that was thicker!.!.so when you stopped smoking, the mucus was still being made in full force!.!.it'll take a while for your throat to get back to normal!.!.

like with most things, it gets worse before it gets better!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Congratulations!

Your body is cleaning itself out!.

Also, the stress of quitting might have left you open to a mild bug or virus of some kind!.

Keep drinking water, get exercise, eat well, all the things you know to do to feel better!. You will cough for a little while, but that will go away, too!.

Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Like the saying goes 'things gets get worse before better"
and eventually you'll start to feel your lungs working again, all that coughing is because your body wants the nicotine and since your not giving it to it, its basically lashing out (like a child) eventually your body will be able to handle its self without the addiction of nicotine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The stuff is leaving your system, and your body is looking for it!. You actually (obviously) build a physical need for the nicotine, so you're having withdrawls!.

Exercise, eat some healthy foods, stay strong, and you'll do fine!. My 50 year old Mom did it, you can too!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your body is probably freaking out because you haven't had something that it's been dependant on!. Working out, and taking care of yourself might work!. Withdrawls suck, but in the end, you'll be much happier!. Maybe you should talk to your doctor about the coughing!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You have mucus coming up from your lungs from all that smoking and you need to go to the doctor and have your lungs checked eat and get excercise and I want to say I am proud of you for quitting I have been smoke free almost 3 yearsWww@Answer-Health@Com

Detoxification!. Keep up the good work!. God bless!. By the way, you probably don't look as bad as you think, you probably feel bad!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your body is adjusting to the changes because of the lack of nicotine!. Don't worry, in another week or less, you should feel better and healthier already!. Keep up the good job!Www@Answer-Health@Com
