First of all there is no need to be scared, just relax!.!.!.

I suppose anaesthesia means general-anaesthesia,so you will be not allowed to eat or drink or smoke for minimum 6 hours before surgery start time,And you won't feel any pain during surgery!.

Normally tonsillectomy takes half an hour on an average,When you wake up you may be slow and clumsy for initial few hours !.
You don't wake up in pain but as pain reception varies from person to person, nurses usually give you pain medication!.You may ask your doctor about adequate pain relief before going for surgery so that he plans your pain-management accordingly!.

You may have mild soreness of throat for 7-10days,mild earache for one week or blood mixed mucus for one week!.

Ice cream is ideal first meal after surgery because it is soft and offers comfort for sore throat!.Have lots of cold water!.For first 24 hours you can have cold yogurt, jelly, pudding!.For one week have soft, bland diet not very hot like meshed potato's,oatmeal, soups!.Avoid acidic, spicy and rough food!.
Lot of chewing-gums helps!.

Oral-hygiene is very important so you do gargles every time you eat something!.
You can put ice-packs around your neck that reduces pain!.Avoid heavy physical exercise or activities!.Take rest for one week!.

Because of recurrent infection adult develop fibrous tissue,so more trauma on dissection of tonsil ,that may be the reason behind delayed healing in adults as compared to a child!.But with newer techniques and good surgery as such there is not much of the difference!.

All the best to you!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm a 21 yo from Australia- I had my tonsils out late last year!. You will not be able to eat or drink anything after 7am- so if you're one to get hungry, wake up early and have a light breakfast like tea and toast before 7am- You won't be allowed to have milk, food, lollies or chewing gum the morning of surgery!. Usually a tonsillectomy takes about 45 mins and that is the duration of the anaesthetic!. Anaesthetic affects different people in different ways- I woke up a bit teary and emotional!. My pain was just like having bad tonsilitis when I woke up!. I stayed the night at the hospital and it took me a good two weeks at home to fully recover from it!. One word of warning- try and wean yourself off the strong pain relief containing coedine unless you're able to eat- I got a nasty side effect of vomiting because I took it when I wasn't able to eat much!. Stock up on yoghurt, soup, ice-cream and make little ice-blocks of water to suck on while you're in bed! The ice really helps to numb the site!. The surgeon will probably make you eat toast or something similar because rough food helps clear the site from possible infections!. Hope this helps!Www@Answer-Health@Com
