Question: By taking Lortabs aren't I suppose to have a positive reading for Opiates in my urine!?
I take Lortabs APAP 10/500 prescribed by my Doctor!. They did a urine test on me and told me that I had Opiates show up in my system!. The Nurse said I tested positive for the drug Dilaudid showed up!. I am totally confused!. I honestly do NOT take any other medicines that are NOT prescribed to me!. How can this be accurate!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Dilaudid is hydromorphone!. The body metabolizes the hydrocodone in Lortab into hydromorphone!. It is normal for you to have opiates, as hydrocodone is an opiate!. The nurse was making an improper, and uninformed statement by saying you had Dilaudid in your system, however, you probably did test positive for hydromorphone on the GCMS test which is performed after the urine screen!.

EDIT: You need to talk to the physician, not the nurse!. Discuss the fact that hydrocodone is metabolized into hydromorphone by the body, and it is common for Lortab patients to test positive for hydromorphone!. It is inappropriate for their office to say that you tested positive for Dilaudid, because that is the brand name of a medication!. The testing can only test for the drug and metabolites, hydromorphone is the metabolite, if the physician does not understand this, then you probably want someone who knows more about the medications prescribing them anyway!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If your job required you to take a drug test the person giving it should have asked if you are taking any medication prescribed by a Doctor!.I can't the question about what the test showed positive for!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
