A picture of the optimal way of positioning your wrist can be seen at this page:

Look at the one they call "the Vice Grip" and "the soft touch"!. I don't know why they tell you avoid "the Vice Grip", but the person is apparently using to much power!. Of course you shouldn't use to much power, but I think you are the best to judge it in your situation!.

1) The thing you have to be aware of is where you place your thumb!. Always place it right on the other side of your middle finger!. They should always stick together like that!.
But be aware! As my teacher says, the audience must never be able to see your thumb (see "the soft touch")!.
And the fingers on the frets; just place them fairly parallel to the guitar neck!.

Don't look at the other positions because they are just rubbish!. If you want to play as effectively as possible the mentioned grips will allow you to reach the notes much better!. The other grips are for more "rough" playing!.

2) Another very important thing is the way you sit!.
The most effective position ( the position for playing classical guitar ) can be seen here

It may not be the coolest position, but any other position will affect either your wrist (that's what we are trying to avoid) or your ability to reach the notes!.
If you play a right-handed you can see that your left foot must be raised aboved the ground so that the neck gets closer to you and so the frets are reached more easilly!.
The other leg could be bend so you feel more comfortable!. To do this, sit at the edge of your chair!.

And your thumbs will soon get harder skin at the tips, so the pain caused by them is simply temporary :)

Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

You can wrap your wrist so that you have support because the pain you maybe experiancing is a cause of either overwork/strain or weakness!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is simple you leave your thumb on the underside and put the neck in your palm

looks like this

rest your hands because they could start bleeding or swelling, and give the guitar a rest for at least 2 days so you hands can heal!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Plain and simple!. Don't play guitar!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
