Is my injury serious?!

Question: Is my injury serious!?
I had a softball game last night and slid into home!. Stupid idea because I haven't practiced sliding in almost a year!. It didn't hurt going down, but after the collision, I felt a pain behind my left knee!. I sat out for two innings and walked the pain off!. I went in the next inning, ran the bases again (no sliding, thank goodness) and I played catcher for the last inning in the field!. It didn't bother me again until I got home (it's about a 45min-1hr drive from the field to our house)!. I tried icing it, but I was super tired and went to bed!. It only hurts when I push off my left leg (mostly when I'm climbing the stairs and a little bit walking)!. It hurts !.5 - 1 inch below my knee on the back left side of my leg!. It doesn't feel so much like my joint but the muscle!. Should I ice it or just try to walk it off!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Walking off a knee injury only works in the movies!. Because the knees are under so much stress every time you take a step, you must always be cautious of injuries, especially to the soft tissues making up the joints themselves!.

Because it is a relatively recent injury, you have developed inflammation in the area!. You were correct in choosing ice, as it will decrease the swelling, as well as ease the pain!. Make sure you do not ice for any longer than 10 minutes and use a towel or piece of clothing between your skin and the ice pack to prevent frost burn!. I also suggest that you elevate your knee for awhile to take the stress off the joint!. If you must walk, use a compression bandage, such as an ACE to help take the strain off!. Make sure that you still have feeling in your foot and that the bandage does not cut off your circulation by checking to see if your foot changes color or becomes colder!. If this happens, rewrap the bandage, making it a little looser!.

If you do not see any improvement in your condition, or you start to develop new symptoms, you should consult a professional about your injury!. Watch for signs of excessive swelling, discoloration of the skin, changes in temperature in the toes on that foot, signs of knee instability, or joint "locking!." These may indicate a much more serious injury than a muscle strain or sprain!.

Just use common sense! The last thing you want is to develop a knee problem that will prevent you from participating in the games you enjoy!Www@Answer-Health@Com
