What can I do for chronic back/hip/leg pain?!

Question: What can I do for chronic back/hip/leg pain!?
I am 30yo, of average height and average weight!.

If its important, I drink socially, and dont smoke!. I dont use any illegal drugs!.

I have perscription pain killers, Endone, Panadene Forte, Di Gestic and also Diazapam!.

In Feburary of this year, I was involved in a fairly major crash!. I was in a Iveco van and was rear ended while I was at a dead stop, by a 16ton Volvo truck, doing 60km's!.

I have been for a MRI and it shows I have a herniation of L5-S1 and also that it is bulging and pressing on the nerves!.

I find that when I walk any distance, say, roughly a kilometer, I am in chronic pain the next day!.

Last night, we went to a show and we walked from the show to the train station, which was roughly a 5 min brisk walk!. Today, I am in nearly unbearable pain, cannot stand and my legs feel numb and weak!. I have a constant throbbing pain in my right side, above my buttocks and my legs are tingling!.

Any ideas!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
O!.K!. none of the drugs you mentioned are known to me!. Are you in England or Australia!? I ask because the only reference I saw was to Endone!. Panadene Forte sounds similar to an anti-inflammatory/muscle relaxant that used to be prescribed here in the USA!. I fractured C-6 many years ago and damaged my spinal cord!. I also have an old fracture at T-8 (mid back) and similar problems to you at L4-L5/S1!. That is the classic low back pain area!. My situation cannot be repaired surgically!. I take 30 mg morphine SR tabs and Hydrocodone ES 10 mg/650 mg APAP for my severe, chronic pain!. I also have been taking Diazepam for years for both muscle spasms and to help me sleep!. You can try physical therapy but it sounds as if you are a candidate for a surgical procedure to alleviate the pressure on the nerves!. The WebMD link below takes you to the Back pain Center!. There are many different surgical procedures!. Disc herniations can sometimes be repaired using microdiskectomy surgical techniques!. They remove the part of the herniated disc that is causing the nerve pressure!. My ex girlfriend had an artificial disc put in her back and it did not work so I would avoid that procedure!. I have been dealing with my spinal cord injury for 30 years so I know quite a bit about it!. Check the WebMD back pain guide!. It gives you all the options!. You might look into chiropractic help as they might be able to align your spine to relieve the pressure!. If I can help you feel free to email me!. Remember this!.!.!. get at least 2-3 opinions before deciding on a procedure if it comes down to surgery!. A good doctor encourages you to get other opinions!. Best of luck to you mate!. Back problems suck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

my dad was in a motorcycle accident and broke his back!. he literally looked down and his feet were backwards!. he was in a body cast for months, he was in constant pain until he found a chiropractor!. they "pop" he back into place and relieve the pressure on a pinched nerve!. research and get references before making an appointment!. they will xray you and see if they can help you!. i also go myself for migraines and they adjust my neck, it is such a relief!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree with the one who said to get several opinions before going ahead with any options!. My husband has severe, chronic back, hip and leg pain, similar to what you're describing, and has for about 15 years now!. He has 4 herniated disks, 3 of which are leaking fluid!. Basically, the only thing doctors have been successfully able to do for him is to medicate him!. I joined a group on Yahoo Groups called Chronic Pain Assistance, where there are many great people who will be able to give you support, ideas, and even information on your situation!. You have to get approved first, but that usually only takes up to a day, and it's only to make sure there are no spammers!. The owner of the group and moderators are very involved in the group, not like some others I have seen where it's basically a free-for-all!. You may be able to get more help there than you can on here, where you're hoping that someone that knows about your situation will happen to see this question!. Anyway, go to Yahoo Groups, and do a search of Chronic Pain Assistance, and you should be able to find it!. Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well I was not in any accident!. I just stood up to put the kettle on for a cup of tea and BANG! The legs went and the pain in my lower abdomen from top of hip bones to my private area struck and stayed for 30 minutes! My Physician thought kidney stone and after two visits to him went to ER, where they opted for Gynecological problem!? Another 12 months and four bouts of legless and pain, before the MRI and a prolapsed disc!. I assumed they would operate but seems not anymore, so they started me on Fentanyl Patches, which caused me to vomit!. I then had a injection to stop the stomach and here I am two years later, still walking three miles three times per week!. First you have to learn to deal with the fear factor, pain induces fear!. L5/S1 what is the worst that can happen!? Hey surgery! However remember, with age the disc dehydrates, so will shrink back off the nerve roots, but you have to learn to deal with the present!. I spent 8 weeks in a wheelchair, no fun, but it gave me the break I needed to think about what was going on and figure out what I should do!? Therefore I went to the swimming pool and started Aqua Jogging!. You are given a floatation belt that keeps you upright in the water and off you go!. I did, in fact I can do everything in water! Jog, run, star jumps, stomach crunches, you name it!. Getting out was the hardest part because half way up, gravity hits and suddenly you weight 20 ton! I spent three months at this and then went to Pilate's!. This all helps to build up the 'core strength' or the corset of muscles around the tummy, your abs, six pack call it what you will!. Once that has been built up, it holds the spine in alignment and guess what, the fear goes because the pain subsides!. So now I walk three miles three times a week and do one hour of Pilate's every week at home just to keep my core strength strong!. Seems I am 'at risk' of loosing my bowel and bladder function, if that happens then they will operate to remove the disc, but two years down the road, if anything I think the disc is dehydrating faster!.
