Sharp,piercing, shoulder pain??!

Question: Sharp,piercing, shoulder pain!?!?
Standing, arms at my sides, if I attempt to raise my arm straight out to my side at a 90 degree angle or higher, I experience sharp, piercing pain as if it were right in the joint!.

I think this is a chronic problem exacerbated by my sleeping position, with my arms above my head nestling my pillow, while on my stomach!.

Rotator cuff!? Bursitis!? Arthritis!? IT HURTS! What do you know about such symptoms!? How have you dealt with it!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Based on your description you have a subdeltoid bursitis (bursa is a sac of synovial fluid intended to prevent friction between various muscles, tendons, ligaments)!. Subdeltoid bursa is located in the lateral part of your shoulder typically causing pain when inflamed (i!.e!. bursitis)!.
Your description pretty much rules out arthritis or rotator cuff!. In those conditions the pain would occur during a different set of movements!.
It is frequently caused by repetitive motion or can be positional (like in your case)!.
The treatment includes the following:
1!. What you can do at home before you see a Dr:
- anti-inflammation medication (Motrin 600 mg 3 times a day for an adult or Naproxen 500 mg twice a day are the best)
- immobilize your shoulder (even when you sleep) by an arm sing, strapping or taping of the shoulder

2!. Your Dr:
- will give you prescription painkillers
- steroid trigger point injections
- physical therapy
- in rare cases - surgery

I suffered from a problem similar to the reported one that did not allow me lift my right hand above the parallel level to the ground!. As a teacher I had to use the board and I could not write!. No doctor could help me!. The x-rays and others returned perfect condition!. No pain killer could help me!. The general doctor, ortho, heart specialists failed!. They were about to brand me a fake!. But I remembered that I selpt on cold floor for some time and from the next day I had developed this!. This I traced only after the regular doctors failed to relieve me!. So first try to trace it to the day you first noticed it and look back on your activities on that day!. Then with simple wax treatment, I got total relief!. This was suggested by a homeopath!.
This pain and problem, I suffered some fifteen years back!. To this day the problem has not returned!.
