Question: When you crack your knuckles, what are you actually doing to them!?
I've always wondered this because when my friend cracks her knuckles it looks like it doesn't hurt but I don't know if it is actually damaging!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My knuckles crack loudly and it doesn't hurt me!. It is thought to be caused by pockets of gas in the fluid around the joint kind of 'popping'/collapsing under pressure - sounds weird I know!. A lot of people say it causes arthritis, but doctors say there's not really any evidence for this!. There's quite a good medical article about it here, though it's aimed at doctors:

I've heard myths both good and bad about the practice, but from personal experience I can say that I do not recommend it!.

I have very boney knuckles, but I get a throbbing visceral pain around them now and then that I know isn't worse only because I'm only in my 20's!. I have not cracked my knuckles in like one decade now!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't know what it's called, but I heard it is this honey-like material around your joints (that Why it's kinda squishy around your knuckles) It makes bubbles and those bubbles are poping!. It's good for you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No you are NOT hurting them!. The cracking or popping of your knuckles and or toes is only giving a release of gasses that have gathered in those joints!. Sometimes it even relieves pain!Www@Answer-Health@Com
