Mild sprain (grade 1)!. Self-care measures, such as putting ice on your ankle and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), may be all you need!.
Moderate sprain (grade 2)!. In addition to the self-care measures for a mild sprain, your doctor may suggest you wear an ankle brace while the sprain heals!. You may also need to use crutches for a few days!.
Severe sprain (grade 3)!. For a severe sprain and if your ankle joint is unstable, your doctor may refer you to a joint specialist for evaluation!. You may need a cast or walking boot to immobilize your joint so that it can heal properly!. In rare cases of severe ligament tears, or if you are an elite athlete, you may need surgery to repair the damage!.
