How does getting refills on a no refill prescription work?!

Question: How does getting refills on a no refill prescription work!?
I have a prescription my doctor says he has no problems refilling when I need it, but every time he fills it, it has "no refills" at the bottom!. I pretty much just call the pharmacy, go through their automated "filling a prescription with no refills" process, and have to call to check to see if it has been approved yet/is ready!. I'm just curious as to how this works!.!.!.I realize my doctor has to give approval, but does a large, modern chain pharmacy actually have to call my doctor everytime, and wait for a voice approval back from him, or do they have an automated fax/email/other system that gets sent the moment I request the refill!? I ask because sometimes it's ready extremely quickly, like in 2 hours, and others, 3 or 4 days!. Just curious!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
It depends!.
Large chains often send a fax!. If the fax is received during office hours, your doctor's office can fax back immediately!.
Smaller, independent pharmacies fax or phone!.
You are doing the right thing by calling to see if your prescription is ready!. Faxes get lost, don't get sent, never arrive, etc!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No they actually have to call the doctor and get it ok'd!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Because you need your doctor's approval before refilling it!. Plain and simple!. If you think you will need it for a longer period of time - call your dr!. when the next refill comes and ask him if he can prescribe it for another month (or 14 days, etc!. whatever your prescription is)!. Don't ask your pharmacy, you need to call your dr!. first to request that!. Also, it probably takes 2 or 3 days, because your dr!. or support staff there is busy and just hasn't sent the approval yet!. Next time that happens, if after a day (or by the end of the day) you haven't received an approval, call your dr!. up and tell him to hurry up!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
