Attention medical people...?!

Question: Attention medical people!.!.!.!?
My son got 6 stitches on his head (top of forehead into his hair) and the ER doc told us we should have them removed 5 days later by his peditrician!. My friend said when her son had stitches on his forehead, they were told to have them removed 7-9 days!. They did just that and within 2 hours, his cut split back open and he had to have another 7 stitches to close it up again!. After 9 days, those were removed!. She thought 5 days sounded on the short side; my son's cut was pretty deep!. I want to hear from people who actually have experience and knowledge about this; our 5 days it up tomorrow and I have an appointment for them to be removed, but I'm second guessing that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had a pretty serious gash on a toe, it was bleeding profusely and I got about 5-7 stitches!. After 5-7 days I could see that it was healed and didn't see the point in bothering my GP so I removed them myself - no problem!.

Obviously I don't recommend that course of action, removing yourself, but the point is that as an adult my healing was good enough on a deep cut in an area that experiences friction that I didn't have any tearing or re-opening of the cut - and children tend to heal faster!.

It generally depends on the length and the depth of the wound, as well as the stresses caused around it!. The only reason they remove sooner rather than later (I believe) is that the stitches will scar more if they don't take them out!. Your pediatrician will certainly know, and it's best to trust their judgement!.

The biggest thing is to make sure your child takes it easy after the stitches are removed, because it's strain that will re-open the cut!.!.!. no matter if it's a week or two weeks, that skin covering the cut will still be relatively thin and weak!.

The doctor will be able to tell by the width of the gash and the quality of the healing!. If you're concerned, the best thing to do is to let them know when the wound was last bleeding after the stitches, as well as volume of bleeding, and any opening of the wound your son might have had!. That will be the best information you can give to help them!.

Good luck, hope your son feels better! Stitches are no fun!.

There are different kinds of stitches, and also different levels of skill among doctors doing the stitching!. Also glue may have been used along with the stitches!. A cut on the forehead can only go so deep, and those muscles are not weight bearing or anything!.

I am always curious as to why people second guess their doctors when a lay person says something different!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

That does sound like a rather short time; normally its closer to 10 days!. It certainly won't do any harm to leave them in a little longer if you want to!. Personally, I have taken out my own stitches whenever I've had them!. I'm not recommending that you do that, but if you want to wait a few more days I don't see the problem!. Call the doctor's office and reschedule for a date you feel comfortable with and explain your concerns and experience your friend had with her son!. If your son is really active it's probably best to leave them in longer!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Listen to the doctor!. There are different kinds of stitches that need to be left in for different amounts of time!. Your pediatrician will be able to tell if it is healed enough to take them out!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
