I am sorry my previous answer wasn't clear enough!. Oxycodone does not have any known long term effects when properly used other than increasing tolerance (see my note about tolerance vs!. addiction)!.

I can understand what it's like to live in g-d awful pain ( I rarely had days below a pain rating of 8) and sometimes I spent nights wishing I would just fall asleep and not wake up!.

I'm curious as to why you aren't taking Tylenol with your oxycodone, as it potentiates it (makes it far stronger without increasing the long term side effects)!. As long as you don't exceed the maximum dose of 100mg/hr generally one can stay on Tylenol practically forever!. Your doctor may want to give you an occasional 1 week 'holiday' to let the excess clear your system, but you and he/she can talk about how often, how long etc!.

I suffered for 15 years before I got hooked up (pardon the pun) with a top notch pain managment team at the Cleveland Clinic (OH)!. Before they took over I felt like I was being barbecued with a blow torch 24/7!. Sleep!? Forget it!. Then they started me on methadone (yep, it's the synthetic heroin they use to wean drug addicts off illegal heroin!. It's dirt cheap if you, like me, has to buy my own)!. Methadone gives a ZERO 'high' and lasts a long time!. The dose is flexible & it hasn't any unusual ill effects on body systems!.!.no more so than any other narcotic!. Like Oxycodone you still have to stay on your prescribed dose, but boy oh boy, do you get pain relief!

I still have some breakthrough pain and use Percocets prn!. They no longer give me a 'high' (neither does the morphine they use in the hospital when I go in for an exacerbation of my MS) thanks to the methadone!. That's the best part!.!.!.I can still work and drive because I never get zoned out!.

If you don't have a pain mgmt specialist yet, I strongly recommend you get one, and if you do, talk to him about the methadone!. Just like you get a cardiologist if you have heart problems, and you get an orthopod if you break a bone, you get a pain mgmt specialist when you (like me) suffer from severe chronic pain!. In my experience I've found regular docs won't/can't prescribe Methadone because it's a Level I narcotic, nor do they prescribe other narcotic or pain meds appropriately because so many lack more than basic training in pain management and don't understand how to prescribe pain meds correctly ( if it isn't for short term use or isn't a Level III or II narcotic [i!.e Darvocet, Percocet, etc] they are ver shmucked!.

I do hope you find someone to get your pain controlled to the point you are worry AND pain free (reduced)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Any narcotic pain medicine that regulates neurotransmitters and opiates in the brain can cause permanent personality changes!. I have at least two friends who are now taking medicine for depression that their doctors feel was induced by rx pain medicine abuse!. One of them also became easily agitated and violent (almost like a roid rager)Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you are concerned, you could ask for a pain management appointment with a specialist to get an idea of what your options are!. Maybe there are other drugs/different chemicals or treatments that would be beneficial!.!."Course, you have to live today as well as you can and weigh the risks and benefits of any treatment!. Sometimes the risks are worth it!.
We all can benefit from other ideas then decide if they are helpful to us or not!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yeah you are right,,,addiction is just part of the deal with treating pain!.
People that are not in pain every day just don't quite understand that a lot of times!. Those of us that do HAVE to take it dream of the day we don't!.
I've been taking oxycodone for several years and have blood tests every 6 months!. I've never had any problems!. Here is a link that will give you far more info than I can!. Good luck
