Statitics are pretty grim for the ederly with a broken hip!. They are not strong usually and heal slowly!. Fact is it's the imobility that brings them down!. Using the bedpan is torture!. Any movement is torture when a fracture is not repaired!. Pain and pain meds causes poor appitite, leads to dehyrdration and weakness!. Leads to painful constipation futher decreasing the appitite!. Bedrest will weaken your muscles much less a 91 year old!.
General anesthetic to put a 91 year old to sleep for surgery can be tricky!. Depends on her state of health!.!.!.heart and lungs especially!.!. A spinal anesthetic might be useful in someone such as your Mom!. Numbs the lower body only; then they give IV sedation to relax them!.
Morphine can depress the breathing!. Look it up on webmd!.com
Always be straight forward with the doctor!.!.Ask questions!.
Ask what her prognosis is!? (What can we expect the future to bring!.) What are the options of care!? What do you recommend for her!?!.!.!.!.A hip replacement is a big expensive surgery and may be the only option and perhaps not a viable one but I remember when we didn't have artificial joints !.!.!.what did we used to do!?
Say," Be straight with me doctor, what do you think"!? If he is truthful and you don't agree then don't hesitate to go elswhere!. Sometimes medical people think the ederly should not be treated aggressively but anyone should be relieved of pain and given the best quality of life possible!. Pain meds will not fix the problem just knock her out!.!. Relieving the pain is certainly the kindest thing you can do to decrease suffering!.
Ask him what if it was his Mother!? Ask your doctor to view the x-rays with you!. Don't kid yourself ,,,you can see if the hip bone is fractured or out of alignment!. You can tell if the bone or fractured ball joint is poking into the tissues!. Under no circumstances should she put weight on that leg!. She can develope a bedsore or pressure sore quickly if they don't turn her!. This can be neglect!.!. Hopefully she is on an air mattress that relives pressure!. If that doctor doesn't want to care for her don't encourage him to do so,,,,,,get a different doctor!.Good Luck!.!.!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

it's not going to get worse- it's already broken!. It's not going to heal- she's 91!. There may be other things that need to be adressed with her before she is taken to surgery- if indeed she is even fit for surgery!. A person that is 91 years old sometimes is not a suitable candidate for surgery because of age and other health problems (they may not survive anesthesia or the shock of the operation) It is possible that the doctors are trying to stabalize other health issues before they take her- to make it more safe!. Morphine is a usual and common medication for pain, and is actually quite appropriate for treatment of hip fracture pain!. I wouldn't worry about that one!.!.!.!. I would make sure they explain the plan of care to you, and that you understand what it is, and they answer your questions!. (doctors and nurses) It sounds like you aren't getting the full story here!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hey I know how you feel!. I took care of my Mom until she was 85 years old!. Don't the doctors say it's a little risky for someone your Mom's age to have surgery!?!?

I know it's tough, but at these times you really have to trust the doctors & nurses!. They know what is best even when sometimes it doesn't seem like it to you!. I know I felt that way a few times!.

My Mom also fell and broke her hip and she just wasn't heathy enough for her to have the operation!.

You mentioned morphine,,, don't be surprised if your Mom starts acting a little weird,, or maybe not even know who you are!. It doesn't happen all the time but we knew several elderly folks that had it happen including my Mom!. She didn't know who me or my son were for about 4 days!.

Here are a few sites you may want to look at!.

Good luck and I think you are a wonderful person for taking care of your Mother!. A lot of people just throw their parents in nursing homes!. Your Mom is a lucky lady to have someone to care for her!. God bless and I hope she does fine!.

EDIT: The nurse's answer is very good!. She knows that loved ones don't understand what the plan is all the time!.
The best thing I did was sit down with the doctors and let them explain what was going on and what to expect!. Then the ICU nurses helped me daily with understanding all that was happening!. Plus after I talked to them I felt a sense of relief,, just knowing and understanding help me a lot!. It was the first time I was able to relax in days and I knew she was in the best hands of the doctors and nurses at the hospital!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
