My father also has bouts of gout!. It can be semi-controlled quite well by watching out for trigger foods and drinks!.

Gout often makes the swelling look red and shiny around the joint - in some cases the skin will peel!.

My dad avoids fruit juices, kidney, liver, veal, turkey and venison, anchovies, herring, mackerel, sardines, fish roes, mussels and scallops, asparagus, kidney beans, lima beans, lentils and spinach and any foods containing yeast extract!.

Drink plenty of water - I would say avoid alcohol but you dad doesn't drink so that's not an issue!.

He should rest his leg!. Apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas (both wrapped in a towel) to the joint for 20 minutes to help reduce the swelling, then take it off!. You should not apply ice directly to your skin as it can give you an 'ice burn'!. You can reapply the ice pack after the temperature of the joint has returned to normal!.

The doctor may also be able to give him something to take to reduce the amount of times the joint flares up!.

Hope he feels better soon!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Almost certainly gout!. It has all the classic symptoms of gout!. Has he been checked for it!? If it isn't gout then perhaps he has sciatica, which is a pinched nerve in the lower back which causes pains to shoot down the legs!. But with the swollen foot my money is on gout!. Good news is that it is super easy to treat!Www@Answer-Health@Com
