First thing to realize is that adults do not like to be told how to behave, especially by their children!.

Your dad has an addiction to cigarettes!. His body makes him want them, so it is very hard for him to quit!.

The best way to talk to him is to realize that it is very hard to quit, and that you have to *help* him quit, do not simply tell him to!.

I got my parents to quit smoking by telling them repeatedly, over the years, that smoking is damaging to both their lungs!. It took a long time, but I kept on them about the dangerous effects of smoking over a long period of time!. I think it really helped them to know that immediately after they quit, their lungs will try to go back to normal!. After a period of approximately eight years, a person's lungs can almost completely rehabilitate by getting rid of the tar, etc!.

Do some research!. There is a lot of information out there about why to quit, how to quit, how to encourage someone to quit!.

Let your dad know that you want to keep him around for a while and that smoking takes precious time away from his life: time that he could spend with you later on!.

Finally, let him know that there are a lot of new ways to quit!. You can quit by getting pills from your doctor, by going through hypnosis, by purchasing over the counter medications (the patch, gum, etc!.)

Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You can't make him stop unless he wants to!. He has to find something more important to him than cigarettes!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My father is 64, and been smoking almost 50 years!. He use to smoke 3 packs a day, and he's never had a smoking related illness!.
I'm guessing the most your dad smokes is 8-10 a day, judging by what you say!. That's nothing compared to others!.
My grandparents are 87 and 83, and have been smoking for over 60 years, with no signs of stopping!. It would probably kill them if they did stop!.
He'll be just fine!. Just leave him be!. If he wants to quit, he will!. Harassing him, will make him smoke more!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You cant really do much!. He has to want to quit!. Quitting can be not just hard on the body but the mind to!. Its a habit that is engrained into him, like biting his nails or brushing his teeth!. It takes real willpower!. All you can do is tell him how much you love him and that one day you want him to see his grandchildren but if he keeps smoking he might never get to see them and that it makes you sad that he smokes and you want him to live a full long life!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

let me try to help you, first what you are trying to do is wonderful, but yes that right the big but word, if he doesn't want to quiet smoking he won't!. first thing is he has to want to!. you might just say I want you to stop smoking so you will be here for me when I need you dad!. I didn't and now I have infaseama, and use a wheel chair to get around!. now let me try to tell you if he trys to stop he may be and old grup for a while, but this will pass, he may not make it the frist time, but he must try again, stoping smoming is very hard to do!. have a nice day best of luck!.oh did I forget to tell you I have to have oxegen24 hours a dayWww@Answer-Health@Com
