Answers:
When you first get them, start out by icing and elevating your shins!. Once they start to feel better, walking willl help!. You shouldn't run until your shins have healed completely!.

Want a tip to prevent shin splints!? Tap your feet!. Seriously! Plant your feet with your heels firmly on the ground, then tap one foot at a moderate-to-rapid pace for a minute, then switch to the other foot!. You'll notice it gets more difficult to tap your foot as you go along -- that's normal!. Works like a charm!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Shin splints are hairline cracks in your shins caused by the impact of running on hard pavement!. Once you get them, you never really lose them!. The cracks need to heal over time so they can fill in with more calcium!.
The only thing you can do is change your workouts to other activities that don't involve running!. This means doing activities such as bicycling, swimming, yoga, gymnastics, and weight lifting!. You can get a great workout by combining 3 or more of the above activities 4x a week!. If you really feel you must run to get a workout, invest in a mini-trampoline and do your running in place while the trampoline absorbs the impact of your feet!. (It's also good for your knees, too!.)
As for the pain, cool gel packs on your shins should help!. Low doses of over-the-counter pain relievers should also help, but talk to your doctor before you take medicine over a period of time!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you are only experiencing this in 1 shin then you should see an orthopedic doctor to make sure its not a stress fracture!. If you are getting them in both shins then the risk of having a stress fracture is low!. Shin splints are often caused by over-working the muscle in the front called the anterior tibialis muscle!. Working on the strength of all the muscles around your ankle can help!. If you wear poor footwear that can contribute to this condition, as can having too little or too much arch in your foot!. I think you would be best served to go to a running store with knowledgeable staff and have them take a look at your feet!. They should be able to recommend the proper shoe for your foot and tell you if you need orthotic arch supports!. If that doesnt work then go see a physical therapist who can assist you in healing this!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
