Is my thumb nail going to fall off?!
Question: Is my thumb nail going to fall off!?
I smashed my thumb in the car door yesterday (one of the most painful experiences of my life) and now I'm worried that the nail will eventually fall off!. I iced my thumb immediately and it has been on and off ice since then!. I also have taken some ibuprofin and soaked it in warm water and epsom salt today to make the swelling go down!. Right now my thumb is swollen pretty bad and its purple and blue!. My nail is slightly purple but most stories I have heard their nail ends up black within a few hours from all of the blood building up!. My thumb doesn't hurt too much anymore!.!.!.more of just a swollen, throbbing feeling!. Anyway!.!.!.Is the nail going to fall off eventually or do you think I got lucky!? I have also heard that a doctor can poke a hole in the nail to release pressure!.!.!.should I go through with that!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

if you hit your hand that hard, it is always a good idea to have it checked out!. You want to ensure there is no hairline fractrue or infection under your nail!.
I know several people who lost a nail from a hit like that and they all had the same thing happen!. It turned very dark, then lightened up (usually after a release of the pressure) then the nail began to seperate from the skin underneath!. The nail gets soft and you lose your nail!.

if its black I went through it last year!. By tomorrow it will probably look a bit worse, and eventually you may lose the nail!. The nail won't come off until the new one has begun growing in under it though!. All they will do at a the doctor's is drain the trapped blood under the nail with a needle(The black spot is the trapped blood)!. This is both very painful and unnecessary!. It will stop hurting and heal on its own if you give it some time!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
If the entire nail is purple, it might!. Most likely you would only need a Doctor to poke a hole in it if there is a lot of blood built up underneath!. But if it is just blackish blood which came from the injury, there would not be any pressure to release!. Just my best guess from experience, not a professional opinion!Www@Answer-Health@Com
it might fall off , but dont worry, that wont hurt as much as the door, i know a kid in grade two, his finger was caught in a school door(they are HEAVY) and his nail went black, and it fell off, he said it didnt hurt though, and hes in gr!. 2, so if it falls off, dw!. it will grow back!Www@Answer-Health@Com
The same thing happened to my sister and me!. My sister's nail fell off but mine didn't so it depends!. You might want to call your doctor's office and ask if that is a good option before you go through with it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

about the doctor putting a hole in your nail, yes they can do it, or you could do it your self!. heres how,
take a large (if you have large) paper clip and open it up,
next, heat the tip of the paper clip, then place the very tip of it on the center of the blood spot!. the heat we melt through the nail, leaving a hole to release pressure!.
you could also have some one do it for you!.
it happened to me years ago, when i was little kid!. my grandmother just cut the nail off!. it grew back of course!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
