Answers:
Actually, the previous answer is incorrect!. Multiple studies published in first-tier (highly credible) journals have shown that ACL reconstructions performed with a patellar-tendon graft--also called bone-tendon-bone--are up to three times stronger than the original ligament, once healing is complete at 12-18 months!. The bone plugs used for fixation become part of your body after 6-8 weeks!. The greatest risk for reinjury to the new ligament occurs at nine weeks, when the body starts remodeling the tendon!. This period lasts for about a month, then the risk decreases gradually until about ten months or so!.

Hopefully you've been faithful to your rehab--it's the muscle strength and reaction time that protects your graft until healing is complete!. I have college football players, runners, competitive cheerleaders and basketball players who are more than ready for preseason camps after five months!.

Wearing a brace can make you feel better but neither me nor my surgeon believe that any brace will protect you from injury!. Medical research doesn't really support wearing a brace or going without (though the brace manufacturers will swear it does)!. Ask your surgeon or PT about it!. By the way, I rehab about 30 ACLR's a year and only one in the last six years has re-ruptured and this wasn't due to any sports activity!. Good Luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I won't lie to you, there is a pretty decent chance you will hurt your acl again, because once you have re constructive surgery, the ligament is not quite as strong because it is attatched to your femur and tibia artificially, that is what the doctors did!. But, there have been people who have torn their acl and never had a problem with it again!. It all is just kind of the luck of the draw, but good luck!. Oh yea, the brace WILL help in your favor though!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
