If I've nothing in the house I have a drink of cold milk!. This helps temporarily and sees me getting to a shop to buy medicine!. I prefer medicine to the tablets because you feel it working!. You can but Gaviscon but there are plenty of chemist's own versions that are much cheaper and just as good!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

On no account use Alka-Seltzer, this is a totally illogical and potentially dangerous mix of old fashioned bicarbonate of soda and much more worryingly ASPIRIN, which can basically cause ulcers and even stomach perforations!. Its been about for nearly 100 years and it is about time it was discontinued!.

There are 2 main causes of chronic heartburn, it is important to distinguish between them as their managements are now totally different!.

GORD ( called GERD in the States), gasto-oesophageal (esophageal in States) reflux disease!. Here acid goes through what should be a one way valve at the top of the stomach, and burns the oesophagus, it may even enter the mouth!. It is helped by not being overweight, not smoking, taking frequent small meals and avoiding large meals and not eating last thing at night!. It may also help to sleep with the head end of the bed elevated!. Despite these measures long term use of the acid lowering drugs PPIs, such as Losec, is often needed!.

The second commonest cause is ulcer type disease ( often called ulcer type dyspepsia)!. 85% of this is linked to an infection in the stomach from an organism called helicobacter pylorrii!. This has the advantage that it can be cured by a one week course of 'triple therapy!.'

It is thus important that you do see your GP to sort out the best and most effective way to manage your condition!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Please be careful with the heartburn symptoms!. This could be an onset for heart problems!. I don't mean to scare you, but you need to be seen by a doctor if this is coming on quite often!. In the mean time, alca seltzer is fine or any anti acid!. Good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

Hello,

The basis for heartburn is acid, which is squeezed back up the foodpipe from the stomach!. Normally a valve at the lower end of the foodpipe should prevent this happening!. Weakness of the valve can be due to a variety of causes!.

All 'medicine' approaches to treatment focus on neutralizing the acid in your stomach, so that although fluid still gets squeezed back up the foodpipe, it is no longer an acid fluid and so is no longer 'burning!.'

The oldest approach is to take an anti-acid tablet several times a day, or Alka-Seltzer or half a spoonful of sodium bicarbonate!. These all react with the stomach acid to give 'no acid' plus gas, which you burp up!.

An improvement on this is to take a mixture like 'Gaviscon' which is a mixture of an anti-acid and a foaming agent!. Besides neutralizing the acid, this also produces a foam which floats to the top of the stomach (whilst you're standing upright, of course),- - and it is this foam that gets squeezed back up the foodpipe instead of the stomach contents!.

Another approach is to prevent the stomach from manufacturing any acid in the first place!. The two drugs which can do this are both available (in the UK) without prescription!.

The first is called 'Zantac' (the drug name is 'ranitidine') which is called a beta-2 blocking drug!. It works by blocking the receptors associated with acid production!. It is effective but has to be taken twice a day!. It is a matter of regret that no-one in the UK is selling the cheap 'drug only' form, 'ranitidine,' - - you have to shell out for the original proprietary 'Zantac' in a shiny coloured box!.

The second is called 'Zanprol' (the drug name is 'omeprazole'), and this is a 'proton pump inhibitor' drug!. (A 'proton' is another name for a hydrogen ion, i!.e!. an acid ion)!. This is a more modern and definitely more effective drug than the Zantac group!. It may be taken only once a day!. I happen to know it is available on the internet from 'www!.pcpdirect!.co!.uk,' (in whom I have no financial interest)!.

I hope this is of some help!. For a mild, random, annoying heartburn, - as you describe, - I suggest progressing down my list until you find the drug which controls your problem!.

Best wishes,

Belliger (retired uk gp)Www@Answer-Health@Com
