Answers:
Rest:
Rest is recommended for the early recovery phase, lasting 1 to 5 days depending on the severity of the injury!. Immobilization is not usually necessary, and can be potentially harmful!. Immobilization in a splint or cast should be carefully supervised by your doctor, as this can lead to stiffness of the muscle!.

Ice:
Ice application helps reduce swelling, bleeding, and pain!. Ice application should begin as soon as possible after sustaining a muscle pull!. Ice applications can be done frequently, but should not be done for more than 15 minutes at a time!.

Anti-Inflammatory Medications:
Anti-inflammatory medications can help reduce swelling and alleviate painful symptoms!. These medications do have potential side effects, and you should check with your doctor prior to starting anti-inflammatory medications!.

Gentle Stretching:
Stretching and strengthening are useful in treatment and prevention of muscle strain injuries!. Muscles that are stronger and more flexible are less likely to be injured!.

Strengthening:
After injuring the muscle, it is important to regain strength before returning to athletic activities!. Both the injury itself and the rest period following the injury can reduce the strength of the muscle!. Stronger muscles are less likely to sustain a re-injury!.

Heat Applications:
Laboratory studies have shown that temperature can influence the stiffness of a muscle!. By keeping the body and muscles warm, the muscle is less likely to sustain a strain type of injury!.

Avoid Muscle Fatigue:
Muscles help absorb energy, and restoring the strength of the muscle will help prevent re-injury!. Muscles that are fatigued are more likely to be injured!. Athletes should use caution, especially as they become fatigued, as the muscle becomes more susceptible to strain injuries!.

Warm-Up Properly:
Warming up prior to athletic competition or sports will help loosen the muscle and prevent injuries!. Jumping into a sport with stiff muscles can lead to a higher chance of straining the muscle!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The treatment protocol is RICE - rest, ice, compression and elevation!.

Immediate icing of the injury constricts the blood vessels (some of which would have ruptured when the muscle pulled) and prevents further blood from going to the site of the injury!. Ditto the strapping and the elevation - these in turn reduce the amount of swelling and pain after the injury has occurred!. Strapping tightly also provides support for the torn or pulled muscle, especially if you need to continue being able to move it (like walking or whatever)!.

It is often beneficial to alternate between ice and warmth too, depending on what type of muscle has been pulled and where on the body it is located!.

And last, but most definitely not least, seriously good massage by someone who knows what they are doing is incredibly beneficial as it helps to bring the muscle fibres out of spasm and assists them to stretch and become more elastic again!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i have sprain, pulled, and ripped soo manny muscles!. my parents are both doctors and i asked all these questions at some point in time!. the point of ice!? is that so it doesnt swell!. the muscle swells muchhh faster in heat!. cold water, ice, or the best way to treat that way is an ice bath!. fill a tub with water and put alot of ice in it and leave the pulled muscle in the water for about 15 minutes then take out!. as for the making it tight, its basicly the same concept!. keeping it wraped and elevated will both slow the swelling process!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

when you pull a muscle it will go into spasm!. putting an icepack on it will stop it from hurting and keeping it cold!. It works for the whole body!. making it tight and wrapping it makes sure that it wont move so that it can healWww@Answer-Health@Com

Heat- lots of it!. try boiling water and dipping the muscle (not for too long of course)Www@Answer-Health@Com
