Has anyone got a success story for kicking the booze?!

Question: Has anyone got a success story for kicking the booze!?
It's dawning on me (at last) that I have been drinking too much and for too long!. I'm at the stage where I am getting sick of it but find it difficult to stop and often end up drinking more than I intended!. This has been going on for about 12 years and often I feel ashamed of my drinking!. I don't drink during the day but in the evenings I have had periods of very heavy drinking and at times made a complete fool of myself!. It also costs a fortune! Who else has been through the same and has successfully come through this very damaging problem!? What was drink doing to your life and has it now improved!? What is the secret of your success!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I drank for years - maybe 20 or 25!. I have successfully change my drinking habits!. It was difficult!. First I started off by changing my drink of choice to Mikes Hard Limes because I can add a whole lot of ice to it and that stretches it out and weakens the alcohol!. By drinking something other than my usual drink that helped me start to break the habit!. After a few weeks of that, I would get a big cup of ice water when I got home (the same cup I would use for the Mike's Hard Limes), so it was a habit to drink out of the big, insulated cup all evening no matter what was in it!. I also am sticking to the "one an hour, three in an evening" rule!. It has taken a while to break my bad habits, but where I used to drink 6-8 an evening now I maybe drink alcohol once every two weeks - a couple of drinks!. It is just a matter of changing your habits!. You could also join AA - that group is very helpful for some people!. Good luck!. My life is much better since I have gotten control over my drinking because I feel better, I think better, my attitude is better, I don't spend nearly as much money on alcohol so I can blow that on shoes, clothes and jewelry instead!. Also, to help change your ways it might help to keep yourself busy in the evenings - shopping, going out to eat or going to movies, visit family or friends that don't drink, etc!. Anything to help you develop new daily habits that don't include alcohol!. Invite people over and spend your evening cooking dinner for them and visiting!. It is worth the effort it will take and you WILL be happier in the long run!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi Uxorious,
Every time you want a drink, hold a bottle in one hand and, in the other, a photo of your loved one (wife, child, dog etc) then ask yourself - "Which is more important to me!."
I did this 8 months ago and haven't touched a drink since!. My health has improved considerably!.
Good luck, be strong!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Start with Alcoholics Anonymous!. Even my dog knows about AA!.

my mum was an alcoholic for around 30 years!.

she relised the stress it caused on all of us and it caused her many many health problems some serious some not!.

all you have to do is slowly cut down!.
do not cut down by too much otherwise you will have fits which is really not nice to see or feel!.
write a chart on how many units you drink a day!. then cut down by around 3-4 unitss a day!.
eventually you will be at the stage where you can just stop!.
e!.g say you are drinking 15units a day!.!. stay on that for 2-3 more days!.!. then for the next 3 days drink 12!. then the next 3 days drink 9 etc etc!.
YOU need to believe you can do it, to do it!.

Folks who quit drinking have to really want it!. Unfortunately that takes a lot of loss for most people!. Losses like wrecked cars, pissed off friends, job firings (or more subtle quitting before the sh** hits the fan), failed marriages, school issues similar to job!. If these losses don't get someone to want to stop , we go to the next level; arrests, heavy lawyer bills, rehabs to avoid jail, then jails, or institutions!. Oh then the health issues, memory failure, black outs, fluctuating amounts of liquor to get drunk!. Kidney problems, diabetes, blood in urine etc, liver problems, and eventually death!.
It is a progressive disease!. The effects of drinking six months ago won't be the same in six months, it will get worse, never better!.
Go to AA!. There is no requirement to do an expensive rehab first!. If your health is real bad a detox at a hospital will be in order!. The folks at AA can help you with that if necessary!. At our AA group, we say come to a meeting a day for 90 days!. At the end of that period we will cheerfully refund all your misery if you choose not to stay!. It is worth a view from the inside, beats anything anyone outside can offer!. If one meeting a day is too much for you, think about the time you spend drinking compared to 2 hours an evening!. As I said at the top, folks who quit drinking have to really want it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Basically it stems from you having too much time on your hands!.

I know friends that have solved this problem by getting involved in some other hobbies or activities that don't involve drinking!.

For example, do some volunteer work, train for a marathon, etc!. Something else that will take up your time in the evenings!.

I would recommend joining a softball league or something like that, but that typically involves heavy drinking anyway!. So something that cannot possibly include drinking!.

Seriously, train for a marathon or triathlon or something like that!. That way, you have set a goal for yourself and you will be getting in shape at the same time!. Maybe get a couple of friends to do it with you!. You will be spending your evenings doing something productive and you will feel much better about yourself!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
