Soaking a burn in cold or ice water is interesting advise!. If you burn yourself or witness a burn injury and immediately immerse the wound in ice water, the burn will be less extensive and not as deep!. The reason for this is two-fold!.

First, the cold temperature immediately stops the protein change caused by the burn!. Essentially, this just stops the burn from damaging any more tissue!. Second, very cold/ice water has additional benefits for the already damaged tissue!. A fair portion of the pain from a burn comes from the body's reaction to the burn!. Swelling and blistering can occur from minor burns and cause additional pain at the burn site!. Cold water can numb the nerves around the burn and stop this reaction to the burn!. Cold should be applied for 30-90 seconds or until slightly numb!. Without the blistering and swelling, the burn should also heal more quickly!.

HOWEVER, if you wait just 15-30 seconds and then immerse the wound, there will be no beneficial effect from the ice water!. Further, the potential for extending the damage, caused by a frostbite injury over a burn injury, is great!. Therefore, ice/cold water treatment should only be used for small/minor burns where the cold is immediately available, and the cold treatment should not be used for too lengthy a duration!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, that's not true!. You need to cool the burn to stop the burning process, and you do that by putting it under cool running water for several minutes!.
