Why doesn't the hospital give you a small does of Lydocaine before they inse!

Question: Why doesn't the hospital give you a small does of Lydocaine before they insert the IV needle!?
I had that done one time at the best hospital I've ever had the pleasure to stay overnight in!. The lydocaine numbed my hand and I never felt the needle go in my vein!. Any other time I've needed an IV I almost jumped off the bed it hurt so bad (and I've had quite a few over the years unfortunately!.) It's a very painful thing to endure, why don't more hospitals be a little more caring towards the patients in this manner!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
There is also a cream called EMLA cream which is applied topically several minutes before to the site of the stick!. we use it all of the time in children and it is very effective!. It is a combination of prilocaine and lidocaine!. Ask for it!. all hospitals have it available!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It has become policy in most Hospitals now that they have to give you a prick with Lydocaine before they insert the IV needle!. If you are at a Hospital that does not you should ask!. You are in charge of what they do to your body!. You have a say in your care!. Tell them you would prefer the Lydocaine stick!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

When I had an IV put in last week when I had to do a Cardio Catherization the nurse told me that you should drink lots of water or fluids the day before your proceedure then you will be hydrated and they will be able to find a vien and incert the needle easier!. I hope that is true I have to have a third stent put in after the 4th of July!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They usually do!. In fact when they started my IV the other day they did it!. I have a terrible fear of needles and the Lydocaine makes it so much easier for me!. Plus after having Cancer and treatment so many times my veins are not the best!. If they even approach me without Lydocaine I simply ask!. If they say "no" I just ask for someone else!. You have to learn to speak up!! Good luck!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com
