The previous answerer is correct, it takes a matter of weeks, not days usually, to get physically addicted to narcotics!. It does vary from person to person!. If take hydrocodone for say, 4 weeks, you should 'wean' yourself off the drug, not just stop of a sudden!. I had surgery on my shoulder a couple years ago for a torn labrum and rotator cuff!. I was in tremendous pain before the operation, and had been taking pain meds for over a month!. I had to take them for a couple weeks after the surgery, and when I ran out the Dr's office didn't want to refill my RX!. I told them I had been taking them for almost 2 months, and needed to taper off, and they gave me another refill to enable me to do it!. Trying to go 'cold turkey' gave me a very unpleasant experience, with horrible diarreahea and 'restless legs' at night!. I had been taking 4 pills/day, and when I got the last refill i cut down to 3 a day for 5 days (1 every 8 hours instead of 6) then 2 a day for 5 days (one every 12 hours) , then one a day for about a week!. Then for about 3 days I took a half a pill at bedtime!. The first couple of days on only 1 pill I felt kinda 'icky' but it didn't last long!. So I took 3 weeks to taper off!. You can 'titrate' off using only 3 days periods I'm told, but you'll probably have a little more 'discomfort' when shifting doses than the 5 day intervals!. I have read where people who have been taking them VERY long term have to take over a month to taper off, cutting their dosages by a only a small amount from week to week!. That's why it's so important to only use these pills when you really, really need them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
