Shut down a muscle?!

Hi!. I am currently having physio for a lot of things!. And my physio's are thinking of shutting down a particular muscle and re-starting/training!. Is this possible!? And how is it done/ It is in my back and sticks out alot even under clotehs!. App it is currently doing work of most of my back and is badly spasming etc so they want to shut it off and het others working!. Tho i never knew this was possible!?!?
