My son fell out of a chair 2 days ago and landed on his arm/wrist area. What do !

Question: My son fell out of a chair 2 days ago and landed on his arm/wrist area!. What do you think!?
I have persoanlly broken bones, and sprained limbs before, so I know what these injuries look like, in an adult!. My son has been favoring his right hand, which is the one he landed on, a whole bunch!. He cries when he tries to pull his undies down to go to the bathroom, and he practically refuses to use it when he is playing with his toys!. He gingerly holds his cup, but with both hands!. It's not bruised, visibly at least!. It seems swollen, but it's not REAL swollen!. I just don't know what to think!. I've done the ice to help with the swelling, been giving him motrin for the pain, and that's as much as I know to do at this point!. I know I am going to be told to take him to the doctor, but my husband's insurance from the job he just started won't be effective until July 1st, which is next Tuesday!. And we don't have the money to pay the bills right now!. Does it sound like a sprain, could it be broken!? He's also unusually tired!.!.!.does it have anything to do with the wrist injury!? Thank you!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Unfortunately most insurances won't cover anything that happened before the onset of coverage!. You need to check on this!. Most hospitals and doctors are willing to work out some sort of payment plan if you ask!. Having been in your position myself a few times I understand that isn't as helpful to you as I wish it was, but !.!.!.!.

It could be an injury to the ligaments or to the bones themselves!. There are many bones in the wrist, and the articulatory biomechanics are quite complex and precise!. There are bones (such as the navicular) which when they are broken may have difficulty healing, others succumb to compression or even have little chips that break off and would be unlikely to "show" in the same way a traditional fracture of the radius or ulna would, but they could do damage to the nerves, blood supply and tendons that pass through the wrist to the hand!. Others could break (such as the hook of the hamate) and cause loss of muscular function among other things, but would only be able to be seen by a very skilled clinician!.

I'm sure that his fatigue could well be related to the injury!. Not only is his body trying to repair itself, but your son is going through the day trying to do everything "the wrong way" in order to avoid further trauma to his hand!.

I can tell you are under terrible pressure right now, but I think that this is what they call a "no-brainer"!. You know it yourself!. Yes, you need to get it checked out!.

Give your little sweetheart a hug for me, and help him whenever you can see that he needs it!. And please accept a hug from me too, I know you can use it!.

I wish you both the best!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Which is more important--your sons health issues or your concern over the ability to pay his medical bill!? Since you did not say how old your son is I have to assume he is under the age of five!.

TAKE HIM TO A DOCTOR! Even a sprain in undeveloped bones like his can create a serious threat!.

Dr!. Tommy SkeltonWww@Answer-Health@Com

Well he should be taken to the doctor, its kind of sad that you are making to child wait in pain until next Tuesday!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Needs an xray!. If it's broken it could be broken at a growth plate and would cause a deformity if not taken care of!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think you should take him to the doctor!. It borders on child neglect if you don't!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It sounds like it may be a fracture, but without an x-ray that is purely a guess!. Because he is exhibiting so many of the typical signs of being broken, I would have him be very careful and do as much for him as you can!. If it is fractured, you don't want him to reinjure it or make it worse before Tuesday!.

Until then, I recommend some pain meds and an arm sling or ace bandage (but not too tight)!. Also, no horsing around, bike riding, swimming, etc!. Treat it as broken until you know for sure!.

Even if it doesn't still hurt on Tuesday, I recommend you still get an x-ray just to be safe!. If he has kept the fracture still, it might stop hurting, but still need to be x-rayed!.

Oh, the waiting period of insurance stinks! On Tuesday, you may not have your insurance cards yet!. You will need to call the insurance company (get the number from human resources if you don't have it) and get a list of approved doctors and orthopedists and your ID number before making your appointment!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's so easy to judge people!. I'm so sorry about your situation!. Tirdness is likely due to the pain and aggravation!.!.!.!.!.!. of not wanting to hold his cup and perhaps eating less as a result of his hand!. Try helpin him eat more by giving him finger foods like grapes, grilled cheese sandwiched cut in forths!. raisins if he has all his teeth, frozen popcycles are a great way to get more fluids in children but give him lots of milk if he will drink it!.!.!. and help him with his clothing and bath and stuff!. Tell him you know his hand is sore and to let Mommy help him till it gets better!. The childrens motrin is great for the pain and swelling for a few days!. He can have a bone bruise which won't show up on an x-ray but can be really painful for a while!. A hairline fracture might be hard to see on an x-ray and sometimes missed by good doctors, even orthopedic doctors!. You don't say how old your son is,,a small childs bones are somewhat soft and not easily broken so maybe it is just a sprain!. The wrist is a work of art but a painful mess of bones and tendons that can take a while to heal!. a 3" gause or ace bandage wrapped snugly but NEVER TIGHT around his hand and wrist might give it some support!. If you know an EMT or even call the fire department and ask them if they could wrap it for you they usually are EMT's!. Call a pedi or family doctor!. Tell them your situation and ask their recommendation!. A kind doctor may see your child and let you pay them later!. Good Luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hello, I think your son's wrist can be broken, when a children have a fall and later refuses to use the affected limb, is a big symptom of a fracture, now, you can put his arm in a sling and take your son to an ER as soon as possible, the injury can be aggravated and if he's in pain yet, that's a fracture!. This happened to my daughter a few weeks ago!.
She fell off the monkey bars & put her left hand out to catch herself!. She is 8yrs!. old & didn't cry, just said her hand hurt!.
I thought she strained it!. I took her home& iced it!.
She was able to move all her fingers & it didn't swell any,at the time!.
I wanted to take her to the ER & have it checked but she insisted it was fine!. She wanted to go to her friend house & I let her but, told the mother what happened & asked her to let me know if she complained about it at all so I could come pick her up to go to the ER!. She was gone for 1 hr!. & the friends mother called to say her hand was swelling & couldn't move her fingers!.(mind you, she had ice most of the day & some motrin) I took her to the ER(9hrs after the accident)
anyway, her wrist was broke in 2 places!. The Ulna & Radius!.
Fortunatly she didn't need it set or pins put in it!.
I felt like the most rotten mother in the world because I didn't go w/ what my gut said & took her sooner!.
So yes, it could be broken & he should go now so it don't heal wrong & you have worse problems & more bills!.
You can work a payment plan out w/ the hospital or ask about their indegent program!.
I hope it all works out!. I'm sure people have posted nasty things so, don't let it get to you!. They can be vicious!
People are so quick to judge others because they think they are perfect I guess!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
