I have just broken my 5th metatarsal bone in my right foot. How do I get the swe!

Question: I have just broken my 5th metatarsal bone in my right foot!. How do I get the swelling down asap!?
I have been to A&E and have a temporary cast on!. I have the foot elevated, however I would like to get the swelling down as soon as possible!.
I am going on holiday to France (hopefully!) on Wednesday, and the hospital have said if the swelling is reduced enough I will be able to have a lightweight fibreglass cast on for hols!.

So, other than ibuprofen and elevation, is there anything else I can do to ease the swelling!?

thank you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Applying heat may actually increase the swelling!. If you can't put a cold pack in a towel directly on the injury, then elevation is going to be your best friend!. Your injury should be elevated above your heart, not just off the ground!. If the swelling isn't down enough for a fiberglass cast, you could ask whether an Aircast would be appropriate - it's a hard, removable cast, with air bladders that can be inflated to tighten the fit as the swelling goes down!. They aren't inexpensive, but it might save your holiday!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm affraid there isn't much you can do apart from take ibuprofen, elevate as much as possible and rest!.

If you hadn't have had a cast on I'd suggest a cold compress as this reduces swelling but as you have a cast on this won't work and is not advisable!.

Good luck and I hope you manage to get a lightweight pot for your holiday!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Cold ice pack for new swelling, your injury swells because it's your body's way of healing in overdrive in an attempt to carry away damaged cells, the pain is there to prevent the use of the limb until it does heal!. Mother Nature!.Heat compress for old injury to help blood flow so it also heals!. Thats why warmth feels good on a old injury!.Try this website www!.webmd!.com for more info!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I disagree with the hot water!. I use an old cat pan with water and slowly add ice cubes, just enough to keep it cold, but not enough to freeze!.

nuthin' worse than breakin' the paws!Www@Answer-Health@Com

put a warm towel over the area you are swelling!.!.!. =D
it will help reduce the pain!Www@Answer-Health@Com
