What type of needle is used for an IV?!

Question: What type of needle is used for an IV!?
Just curious!.!.!.!.they hurt like a mutha going in AND coming out!.!.!.!.I hate getting IV's!!!!!! If you've ever had one put in wrong (not in your vein,) or had one back up and make your hand swell and turn black and blue!.!.!.!.you'd never have one again!. How come everytime you move your hand even the slightest bit it feels like the needle is pulling the vein out of your hand!?

PS I have a phenominal threshold/tolerance for pain, so if I say something is painful for me!.!.!.!.!.it's usually something the normal person will be screaming and writhing in pain!.
The two most painful things I've ever encountered in my life have been: Having an IUD inserted!.!.!.!.(this hurt so bad it made being in labor feel like a joke!.) and having a gall bladder attack!.!.!.that was terrible!.
Things that are not painful at all:
an unsedated colonoscopy!.!.!.no pain at all
having your teeth drilled on w/o novocaine!.!.!.very mild pain
giving birth to 2 nine pound babies!.!.!.!.painful, but nothing I couldn't handle!. No drugsWww@Answer-Health@Com

I think they make IV needles out of those reemers that the dentist uses to do a root canal!.!.!.!.it's hurts like hell going in, like you're vein is being torn up with barbed wire (I always end up in tears,) and it feels like the vein is being pulled out of the top of my hand when it's taken out!.!.!.!.once someone even took blood from me like that!.!.!.!.I was screaming the entire time!.!.!.!.I won't repeat what LOL!.

I did have ONE very humane hospital that actually gave me Lydocaine prior to inserting that barbed wire into my hand and for the first time (in about 100 IV's that I've had over the years,) it actually didn't hurt much at all!.!.!.!.why can't more hospitals do that!? Too cheap!? Money and profit, not the patient's well being is always a priority!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's actually not an needle at all that's left in your vein!. It's a catheter!. The insert the needle into your vein, and extract the needle only leaving a small flexible plastic tube in!.

You may have really tough veins though!. This would lead them to be more painful for you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

jodi had a great answer its a needle with a thin plastic cath over the needle its not bigger on the end its all the same size and once the vein is punctured and you get a "flash" of blood return they remove the needle and leave the little plastic iv catheter in the vein!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't know for sure, but it sure feels like combination of a chainsaw and a knitting needle!.!.!.!.!.on a scale of 1-10, having an IV put in is definately around a 12!!!!!!!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Some nurses are fabulous at putting in an IV, and some are terrible!.

The needle for an IV is a little wider at the end than you would expect!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
