Scientists aren't completely sure what your appendix does, if anything, but people who have theirs removed or are born without them don't seem to experience any complications!.

The appendix does contain various bacteria and infection-fighting endocrine cells which may be helpful during fetal growth!.

Appendicitis is an infection of the appendix that usually occurs when the entrance to the appendix (a thin tube about 8 mm wide and 2-20 cm long) becomes blocked!. This causes a build-up of pus and other bacteria that eventually infect the area!. The real danger of appendicitis is when an infected appendix swells to the point of bursting, releasing toxic bacteria into the abdominal cavity!.

Gum doesn't get stuck in your appendix!. There is basically no problem with swallowing gum; it passes through the digestive tract relatively unchanged, and exits in stool!. The only way to do damage by chewing gum would be to swallow a large enough wad to cause intestinal blockage!. Especially in adults, a small piece of gum can't do this alone!. Still, it's not a bad habit to get into to spit out your gum instead!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes the appendix does function within the body!.

The appendix is somewhat vestigal, in that you do not need it to survive, and it really serves only secondary purposes!. However, do you consider your fingers vestigal!? You dont need all of them!.
Thus said, it is theorized that the appendix at one time served a greater purpose in humans, closer to that of primates, in the digestion of a largely vegitarian diet!. Ancestors of modern humans, common descent or not, would likely have had an important use of this organ!.

One of the reasons why the appendix is vestigal now, is the ability to remove the appendix!. It is plausible that larger, more functional appendices are favoured by natural selection, but the ability to save an individuals life by removing the apendix, athoughs disfunctional apendix producing genes to be maintained within the human genome!.

The appendix does in fact serve a purpose!.
For a long time, is has been hypothesised that the appendix helped to fight infections!. It is now known that the appendix is a "good bacteria" booster!.(1)

If this appendix becomes inflamed, it must be removed and you will be uneffected for the most part!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Short, blind-ended tube attached to the caecum!. It has no known function in humans, but in herbivores it may be large, containing millions of bacteria that secrete enzymes to digest grass (as no vertebrate can secrete enzymes that will digest cellulose, the main constituent of plant cell walls)!.

The appendix secretes antibodies into the gut and so plays a role in the body's immune system, though it is not a vital one, as patients survive perfectly well following removal of the appendix!.

i dont get what appendicitis is, but if you get it you better get your butt to the emergency room asap before it explodes and kills you!.

it was used to break down things like wood that cavemen used to eat!. because we no longer have use for it, they are small and just sit there!. gum goes right through you and ends up in your poo, your friend needs to read some medical texts cause she dont know what shes talking about!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It is part of your body but a lot of people have to have their appendix out so I would say there is not a major use for it!. A lot of people get appendicitis, which entales a lot of pain and they have to have surgury right away!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
