Lower back disc pain question?!

Question: Lower back disc pain question!?
First unsure if the correct term is "disc" or "disk"!. Long story short a few months ago I started to have extreme lower back pain!. It was an intense sharp stabbing pain with almost like electrical shocks through my body (happened intermittingly)!.

I went to the Doctor and she said I have ruptured or protruded (something) the disc in my lower back!. She wanted to do an x-ray but said that x-rays will not show soft tissue!. After the x-ray they really did not see anything and gave me an RX for pain pills and said to take it easy for a few weeks and then call back for an MRI!.

Well I have to wait a week or two to get the MRI now and wondering if anyone has dealt with disc pain and how did you help relieve it!? Vicodin ES works to a certain degree-- but is not a miracle worker for the pain!. For me upon waking up is the worst, but it really is a downer to deal with pain (at times severe) on a continual basis!. Is there anything to help with the pain until I see the Dr!. again!?
Thank you!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Intervertabral discs sit inbetween each of your vertabra and act as "shock absorbers", so when you move around your back bones dont rub against each other!. The disc is proably best described like ajam donut, its got a firm outer skin, and a softer jelly like subtance in the middle!. Excessive strain such as incorrect lifting (does not have to be heavy) can cause the outer surface to rupture and the jelly like surface to protrude out, this is a prolapsed disc!. Very painful as you have found out, Treatment is usually painkillers, and gentle mobilization!. Do not send yourself to full bedrest, worse think you can do!. The pain is worse in the morning because overnight the discs fill with fluid making them big, and putting extra strain on your damaged disc!. Over the course of the day, the fluid reduces out of the disc!. Few hints to help, dont bend over for extended periods of time eg washing hair over sink, bend your knees when lifting anything!. When gettinbg out of bed, roll onto your side first, then push up with elbows to sitting position , sit for a couple of minutes before standing, give the disc time to adjust to new position!. Hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

MY MOM HAS THE SAME PROBLEMO HAHA TRY USING PAIN RELEIF CREAMS, HOT WATER BOTTLE, AND PAIN MEDICINE!. MAYBE LEG CRAMP PM CAN HELP!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I feel for you!. I've had back pain for years!. Rest helps some, but I also use moist heat along with pain meds to get some relief!.

Try to roll out of the bed rather than sitting straight up in bed!. I find that this technique helps some!. I also try to bend over slowly and touch my toes to release some of the compression!.

Hopefully you will get the MRI soon!. If the pain becomes too severe, you may need to go to the emergency room to be given stronger pain medications by IV !. (I've had to do this before too!.) If the compression is severe enough, they can also put you in traction for the bulging discs!. Been there, done that too !)

Talk to your doctor!. You don't have to suffer and I'm sure your doctor will help you find ways to reduce your pain level even if it means a referral to a pain management specialist!.

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon,
