Question: What happens if someone is transfused too much blood!?
My grandma had to get 4 units of blood and the nurse told my mom they gave her to much but not to worry!. Was the nurse telling the truth or can something bad happen!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Surplus iron is one consequence, as Irv stated, but there are other problems that can result!. A lot depends on why she was given the blood in the first place, her other health conditions, and whether she received packed red blood cells (most likely) or whole blood (less common)!.

Fluid overload can be one such consequence, which can result in congestive heart failure!. This occurs most often, though, when too much whole blood is transfused, especially if she didn't have acute blood loss as the reason for the transfusion!.

Besides an iron overload, excess potassium can also result!. Both of these consequences can result in cardiac and pulmonary problems!.

Not trying to scare you!. The nurse was probably telling the truth as far as your grandmother's conditions are concerned!Www@Answer-Health@Com
