What are pins like for a broken wrist?!

Question: What are pins like for a broken wrist!?
so basically, my 49 year old dad hurt his wrist this morning playing tennis, and he went to a local clinic!. he got x-rays and was told he had a very bad break (on his wrist, a little below where his thumb starts) and the doctor there sent him to the emergency room for a pin and surgery!. can you tell me what this is like!?

will the pin stick out, is it permanent, will he be totally anesthetized (sp!?), or just have his wrist numbed, etc!. oh and what kind of cast, and how long will he have to wear it!.

i'd really appreciate hearing some of your experiences with this!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your father will be put under a general and then his hand/arm opened up and the bones will be put in proper position and then metal 'pins' which are like nails will be used to hold the bone in place!. Then the stitch or staple the wound together again!. The hand will be immobilized but I don't think they will put it in a cast just a bandage depending on the wish of the doctor!. It should take 4 to 8 weeks to heal!. They will be doing x rays about half way through to make sure there is 'union' ie that the bones are knitting properly and in the right position!. Once they are healed he will be fine!. There is no need to remove the pins unless they start to shift and become painful!.If they are required to be removed it is a very short
operation that will not require him to remain in the hospital overnight!. The reason why they have to pin the bone is because the break between the bones may not heal properly if just left to knit by themselves!. They could shift out of position so they literally have to be 'nailed' or 'pinned' into place!. It is the same as when you cut yourself badly!. If the two flaps are skin are not stitched or stapled together to help
them heal lthey will not do so!. In the future maybe 20 or 30 years down the road your father may develop arthritis in the joint where the break is as that is common result of this
type of injury but again it is no big deal!. You will never see the pins as this will all be under the skin!. This is a very common surgery!. Hope this helps and your father recovers soon!Www@Answer-Health@Com

my husband had pins put in his wrist!.!.You are put out they put small pins through the joints of the bone to hold them together!. he also had one in his finger, after about 10 years this one worked it's self out!. The finger stayed in place!. He will have to have rehab to keep the joint loose or he will not be able to use it!.!.That is very important!. In small joints with therapy you usually still can't use it!.!.They heal fast and not a lot of pain!.!.He will be ok!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
