Question: My wife and I are mixed on this question: What is the correct way to stop a nose bleed!?
My wife got a nose bleed a few night ago, now I have always been told to pinch the nose and lean your head back, she was always told to lean forward!. Which one is it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Your wife is correct!. Pinch the soft portion of the nose while leaning forward!. Adding a cold pack to the bridge of the nose can also help, since the cold will constrict the blood vessels slowing the blood flow and decreasing the pressure!. Slow blood flow also promotes clotting!. Do NOT pack anything into the nostril, until you've spoken with a qualified healthcare provider to show you how, you can make the situation worse if it's done improperly!. Placing a cold pack on the back of the neck is not always effective or appropriate!. Do NOT try to breath thru your nose as yearso0305 suggest, this will simply delay clotting, instead breath thru your mouth!.
Most nose bleeds will stop in ~15-30mins!. If it doesn't stop, the person begins to show evidence of shock (>HR, <BP, palor, etc), or other problems develop you should contact medical help!. This is especialy true for patients that are elderly, fluid comprimised, on anti-coagulant meds, etc!.
Nose bleeds can become a life threatening condition, I had an elderly patient who was on anti-coagulant meds and bleed for >1hr before the staff called 911, by the time we got there and loaded her for transport her BP was <90 with an altered mental status!. She wound-up being transported emergency to the ED!.

Rosie R- Swallowing blood during a nose bleed will not "poison" you!. Blood is an irritant to the stomach, and will cause vomiting in sufficient quantities, but won't hurt you directly!.

Sorry but your wife is correct!. The method used to treat nose bleed by First Aiders is to pinch the soft tisue of the nose, with the patient sat down with the head leaning forward!. If the patient leans backwards there is a strong chance they will vomit!. Vomiting creates air turbulence pressure problems in the nose and may disturb the clot and could lead to dehydration!. Do not let patient blow their nose as this will disturb the clot!. If the bleeding is not controllled in 20 minutes, then consider referring to emergency services!. If the patient shows the signs or complains of symptoms shock, at any time, then get them to hospital, particularly if its a young child or an older person!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Pinch the bridge of your nose and lean slightly forward!. (People say that will make it keep bleeding, which is true but it's going to help it build a clot faster!.) If it continues bleeding, you can place an ice cube under the upper lip or press down on the area between your upper lip and your nostrils with your index finger!. If that still does not work then place an ice pack or some sort of cold object at the base of the skull!. Should it continue bleeding go to the doctor!.

Leaning backward will cause the blood to run down your throat and then theres a risk of aspirating the blood into your lungs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Pinch the very fleshy tip bit of your nose and put your head forward!. If you lean back you can swallow the blood and could end up being poisoned by it!. Pinch your nose for at least 10 - 15 mins!. Then let go!. DON'T BLOW YOUR NOSE!! If it still continues do it again for another 10 - 15 mins!. Also being in a very warm environment does make it worse!. Try to move if you can to a cooler room/area!.
Should it not stop after about 45 mins of pinching and letting go seek medical advice immediately!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

According to this source: http://www!.webmd!.com/a-to-z-guides/stopp!.!.!. (webMD) leaning forward is the way to go!. It is best to just hold a tissue against your nose (not up your nose) and just let it bleed out and clot by itself!. leaning back makes you swallow the blood, leaning forward is the best thing to do!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
