Question: I was on Naproxen but my doctor prescribed me Codeine for help with period pain!?
What are the long term side effects of codeine!? When I was younger I used Feminax, but as I've gotten older the pain has become horrendous! I need something which is going to help but doesn't leave me addicted!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi, OK, I will start by saying that I AM NOT AN DOCTOR, yet I have lived with chronic pain my most of my life!.

Naproxen is an ANTI-IMFLAMITORY, Codeine is an oppiode and is very addicting if used on a daily basis, some people are BORN OPIODE ADDICTS, yet of cours if it is never used they would never know it!.

On the other hand, if you are born with that 'recepticle' you could become addicted in a very short amount of time, as little as 3 weeks!.!.!. and I will tell you that even 'with-drawing from a weak drug such as 'codiene - is a horrible experience, like none that I could compare it to!.

And secondly - don't think that 'non-opoide' drugs are not addicting, the are just MAN MADE, but still have the 'addicting effect'!.

Trust me, I wish I had never taken a pill in my life, now I am on METHODONE which I will be on for the rest of my life, and if I were to run out and have to 'Cold Turkey' Odds are that I would surely die!.

The best non-narcotic pain reliever that I have found is "ALIEVE" !.!.!.!.!.!.IT ROCKS !!!

I do hope that you take my advice, let me know if the Alieve works, I'd bet a "BIG BILL" that it will!.!.!.!. God Bless You and Yours, Sincerly-

I must admit I believe codeine is a particularly poor pain killer!. In my last 15 years I fought a local campaign against its use, supported by the Trust Pharmacy Adviser!.

There have been a number of studies comparing paracetamol and codeine preparations with simple paracetamol!. Most of the results showed that it was no more than 5% more effective than paracetamol and had an unjustified level of side effects!.

It can produce headache and abdominal pain and chronic use almost always results in constipation and a level of addiction, remember it is an opiate, all be it a weak one!.

My advice has always been to suggest that patients avoided codeine!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hemp seeds are supposed to help and you can find further information in a web search for "hemp seeds" + "menstrual pains"!.

Natural medication in general has no side effects!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Codeine is addicting!. Ask Dr for something else or further help with your problem!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
