Question: What is the part of the IV line called that goes into your arm!?
I'm talking about the part that stays in your arm with the needle in it and all, the part they usually tape to your arm!. Is it a stent!? Or a shunt!? Or is it called something different!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
It's called an IV needle, or if it is a certain type of needle, like a butterfly, that is also referred to as a butterfly needle, or butterfly catheter (the needle is at the end of a tiny catheter)!. Sometimes a tiny tube is inserted into the vein, and the needle doesn't stay in place, only the tube does, and is called an IV catheter!. When a catheter connects two vessels, like an artery and vein, it is called a shunt, like in arteriovenous shunt!. A stent is just a supportive device placed in a tubular vessel to keep the walls from collapsing, or closing off the passageway!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Actually, the needle comes out!. The type of needle is called a "catheter-over-needle"!. The entire apparatus is placed into the vein, but then the steel needle is removed, thus leaving the catheter in place!.

The IV tubing is then attached to the hub of the catheter to allow the IV fluid to flow in; and afterward the catheter and part of the IV tubing are taped to the arm to keep it secure!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

cannula!.

Catheter is also correct!.

But the process of getting an IV inserted is called "cannulation"
